Just and imaginary scenrio for fun.

If you could choose only one pistol and no other firearms, what would it be?

Keep in mind that you are constantly on the move so reloading would not be an option.

I'm torn between the g21 and the g17, but leaning for capacity over soft shooting larger caliber size. Maybe even the full size Caracal that holds 18 rounds, but Glock has the 33 rounders

But, in the spirit of the thread topic, it would be a Ruger Redhawk chambered in .44 Magnum.

seriously though..if I had to go just one prolly my glock 21. for one, it is my only glock, and it is just very easy to clean on the fly. ammo is plentiful, and it can shoot dirty. my backup choice would be my cz, but it just takes a little more time to take down and clean. luckily I get to have both though :)

No reloading, wow, that's going to narrow things down a bit. Most common calibers in handgun ammo(besides 22lr) would be 9x19mm, 40S&W and 357Mag IMHO, 9x19mm gives you the capacity but wouldn't have the "umph" for hunting large game, 357Mag has the "umph" but you'd be limited to 6 or 7 shots in a good revolver. Guess the only "logical" caliber choice would be 40S&W since you can get loads for it up to 500ft/lbs which would take care of big game and you'd still get 15+1 in a semi. With all the LEO's using Glock 22's I guess a Glock 22 would be the logical choice BUT I'd be looking high and low for a good long gun too while I was "Wandering the Earth".LOL.

There is only one correct answer to this trick question: Glock 17. Capacity, ammo availability, and weight efficiency would be key. That means 9mm generally and a Glock specifically. Bonus is durability and ease of maintenance.

This is what I was thinking. There's a big difference between Book of Eli and Lewis and Clark exploring America.

Book of Eli: G19 or G17 with 17+2 magazines and alot of ammo

Lewis and Clark:

-Full-size .357 with 7 shot cylinder
-Speedloaders
-Very stout 357 loads
-intermediate 357 loads
-lightweight aluminum-cased 120gr. 38 Spl for game-getting and general bumming around

I figure I'd likely have to steal, barter, or scrounge ammo. Both of my choices have rounds I can find with relative ease anywhere in North America.

A Ruger blackhawk convertible in 38 special-357 mag with a 9mm cylinder or the 45 colt-45 acp version. There are also other odd calibers that fit those. Either will shoot weak enough for small game or keep bears off.

I own both of those, an Old Model in the .357/9 and a New Model in the .45Colt/ACP. Good choices, and I've certainly done enough shooting with my old .357/9 convertible (since I owned it back in the days when I was an avid handloader ;) ).

I've always thought the .357 Magnum was an outstanding medium-bore revolver cartridge, with great versatility.

I only chose .44 Magnum because the bigger bore offering gives it a bit more versatility at the heavier end of things that can be done with a handgun, while the .44 Spl loads can still make it a decent low-powered option for some tasks.

In reference to some other comments by folks ...

.41 Magnum? Yes, I miss the Blackhawks (old & new models) that slipped through my hands. Nice niche caliber that gives you much of the higher end power of the .44 Magnum, but at a lower cost in the way of felt recoil.

10mm? Really? Closer to a .357 Magnum with heavy bullets than a .41 Magnum. Sure, someone can hot-rod the loads, but how available are really stout factory loads made by the major makers, meaning the big name ammo companies that make enough ammo so it might be more easily found around the world?

Having followed the postings in this thread so far, I'd have to refine my original answer to step slightly outside the OP's criteria ... if I were really considering going out and about, hither & yon to the far corners of the Earth.

I'd want to have a .44 Magnum revolver (and probably the DA Redhawk for its trigger cocking ability and robust design), backed up by a .357 Magnum for those instances where a medium-bore revolver of the .357's capability would be enough to serve. I'd want to have it in the form of my old, but finely tuned, Service-Six, too. ;) Rugged, reliable and the Ruger DA's don't use fitted parts. ;)

Hey, I've day dreamed ... I mean 'thought' ... about these sort of things while I was a young man, too, and have read all the same action/adventure fiction books as everyone else. ;)

My 4" S&W m29.
.44 mag= Big enough to take most any game, 4 legged or 2.
.44 Spec= Another man stopper but light enough not to kill someone
1/2 mile away or thru to many walls.
.44 Shot= Small game getter.
In short, anything from a squirrel to a bear. One gun to do it all and
the 4" is concealable.

01-28-2012, 22:56
Revolvers also have the advantage of not being super ammo picky. If I had a .357 magnum revolver and stumbled on a box of 9mm, I could make improvised ammo.

Use my multitool to carefully tear open the 9mm cases. A 9mm powder charge is pretty much the same as a 38 +p. Carefully pop out the primer with a nail. Load the 9mm charge and bullet into some of my empty casings. Try to crimp the mouth of the case as uniformly as I could with the multitool to keep the bullet in there tight.

It won't be super accurate and it is dubious reloading at best, but if I had no choice I could make it work. You wouldn't exactly be able to do that with an auto.

A SIG Sauer P226 9mm with a bunch of extra mags and a S&W 686.

I think I will change my to the Ruger Blackhawk 357/38 spl with the 9mm extra cylinder. That way, scrounging for ammo would give me more options. Pluse you could carry all 9mm luger ammo and the extra 357/38 spl in case you find ammo in that caliber.

A good 1911 and a few mags. After all, the end of civilization as we know it was brought about by the release of a microbe that digests all plastics, and a nasty bunch of EMP strike's. I am going to be pretty well screwed anyway, so I will be keeping a super low profile. The pistol will be for a last ditch defense.

Oh, that's right, wander the world. Sorry. A 1911 with a .22 kit. :)

I'd like to step it up a G21 but given what's on hand, I'd certainly settle for my G17.

A pistol chambered in .357Sig. The round is flat shooting and really hard hitting. Thinking either the glock 31 or the Sig 229 E2.

Okay. One handgun. Leagally, so far, one handgun means the frame. So I would have my GLock 35 frame with my G22 slide, 9mm, 40sw and 357 sig barrels and a few mags of each to tote along.

Glock 20sf with .40, and 357sig barrel along for the ride. I also like the idea of a 12 gauge shotgun in a pistol form because it seems like shotgun shells are the most common ammo around....everyone has a shotgun and shells laying around the house. Plus I can shoot birds for dinner if needed.

Gotta be a g29 or g30 right?

Probably my Glock 19 RTF2

If I could carry a second gun, it would be my S&W 438.

This way, i would have access to guns that are of 2 of the most common calibers around, 9mm and 38 spl. Hopefully if I found ammunition I would be able to use it in my weapons.

My CZ SP01. Since I use it for USPSA, I am
more used to shooting it compared to my Glock.

It would be a Glock 17 or 19. There is 9mm ammo on every continent and would not be hard to find. Also spare parts should be easy to get. Maintenance would be easy too. No special tools required, just a punch. The Hi-Power is probably the second most numerous 9mm in the world, but spare parts and ease of repair kind of put it down compared to a Glock. All parts come from the same factory for Glock made on computer controlled machines. Hi-Powers have been made all over the world to various tolerances, so handfitting may be required.

For the folks who plan to wander the earth with a Glock...will it be with an empty or loaded chamber?:dunno:

Are you changing this fantasy topic?

This scenario, probably loaded

Grandma keeps the Glock 9mm close and although not my favorite weapon it could very well be the best choice for multiple reasons.

sorry:embarassed:didn't mean to get this fantasy thread off topic.

On your point about the firearm being loaded...would it be with FMJ or HP ammo?:dunno:

Leave the house with Hp's. But may have to scrounge and end-up with FMJ's. That's why it would be a G21. The ole' .45 won't ever shrink.
And the 21 over a 1911 for mag capacity and, well you never know you may not be able to find any cleaner/lube for awhile.

All good. I have 1k hollows on hand, but would use anything I can get my hands on in this "end of civilization" scenario

OK...I think I got it. :embarassed:

The perfect 'Wander the Earth' firearm is a Glock G19 with HP ammo, a whole bunch of backup magazines...and maybe a suppressor.

Should it also have maritime/marine cups for shooting underwater?:dunno:

For a TEOTWAWKI pistol, seems to me you would want something reliable, parts if you need them, and nothing weird caliber-wise. My bug out bag is stocked with a G17, six 33 round mags (excellent "ammo carriers"), and four 17 rounders. I like the 9mm because it has reasonable performance and is pretty light, takes up little room in the bag. Very important for "wandering the earth", you would want to use a very common scroungeable and tradeable round (civilians, police, and military all have stocks). During the 2008/9 Obambi silliness, about the only thing I could consistently find was 9mm.

w german Sig Sauer P220 .45 ACP. backup to this? G26. despite the difference in platforms... i break my own rules to include the G26 in the mix.

Yes, I would probably go for a 10mm and choose the G20.

[edit: screw it, my G26 is perfect]

I roamed almost 7,000 miles of the earth last summer on a motorcycle...and carried a G26 and a couple of G19 magazines.

Bold, awesome, and probably mostly illegal. But mostly awesome.
