How many of you guys carry a full size pistol vs. compact/sub-compact?

In my opinion it comes down to weighing the pros and cons...more capacity & better ballistic performance OR more comfortable to carry and less capacity and decrease in ballistic performance.

I carry my G22 in a Raven Concealment Phantom, riding on a 5.11 Operator belt (1.75") I find it to be comfortable and concealable...but there are times when using a G27 would be much more convenient to "strap on and go".

6+1 .45 sub-compact in a Remora in my front pocket with a spare mag in a nylon flashlight holster on my belt.

I'm fortunate that I can wear BDU's daily.

I found a pocket pistol was the only way I could make myself carry every single day and every single minute.

The size and weight of a standard polymer gun would start to bother me. So I would leave the gun in my car... a lot.

Started with a semi full size auto, dropped to a sub compact, to a heavy pocket gun, then down to a tiny polymer pocket gun.

When I feel inadequate with the pocket gun, I open carry a full size or sub compact. Sometimes using a cover garment.

If someone politely asks me to disarm, I can put my open carry away and still have my pocket pistol on me. Unless, the law specifically prohibits it.(court, and schools) Then I go naked.:embarassed:

It is impossible for me to conceal a full-size pistol. I've tried with my Glock 21 and M&P Pro... You can just see the massive bulge. Unless I have a coat on and don't plan on taking it off, it's compact/sub compact for me.

I carry any time I walk out of my house (off-duty LE in a major city). I carry a Glock 26 because it's a good balance for me between concealing and having a weapon that will be effective in a fight. I don't feel some of these tiny pocket guns will do me any good if SHTF. I carry a G19 on duty, and I can conceal it if I have to. But I'm a thin guy, so it does print a bit and it isn't as comfortable in my car.

For me it depends on weather, clothing, activity, and "acceptability" for the lack of a better word to use on a public forum.

My preferred is a 4" M1911 in .45
If not wearing a jacket or coat, I go to a PPK .380 in my pocket
If I need deep cover it is an LCP in .380 in one of several carry methods.

I will open carry my G21, but thats about it for full size. MY dan wesson bobtail .45 conceals easiest and I dont really mind the weight "good belt". I will also have no problems carrying the G19 or Sig P229 in IWB. I am only 5'7" and 140 lbs and the G19 is really the only gun that prints at all for me and thats only sitting down or leaning over.

I carry my G22 in a Raven Concealment Phantom, riding on a 5.11 Operator belt (1.75") I find it to be comfortable and concealable...but there are times when using a G27 would be much more convenient to "strap on and go".

Guns: I have the G23/27/30/36. I have a Smith and Wesson Model 627 4" 8 shot .357 and a Ruger LCR.

Holster:I use a Shielded Holster Phalanx. No issues concealing any. Comfortable. Well made.

Background: I've been concealed carrying for a short while. I started in Florida and then move to Virginia. Florida posed some challenges because of the heat and humidity. I had to change my style of clothing to accommodate for a full size or compact. I had snubbies, at time, or a 27, predominantly. Winter didn't last long. At times, I did carry my 1911 Government.

In Virginia, it is much colder for much longer. It's easy to conceal anything. Any size, any weight, with the proper holster. I have a large revolver, 4" barrel, that I have a holster being made for it (8 shot 357). I'm going to try it out. Cannot try carrying like that in Florida. I can in Virginia or Utah. For a quick grocery run (like a midnight run), or if I feel like a quicker draw is necessary depending upon where I am going, I'll pocket carry an LCR because I can have my hands in the pocket and the hand around the gun. In one motion, I can draw and fire. People have their hands in their pocket all the time. It is only a 5 shot. Im comfortable with that. Otherwise, in my Glock concealment system (Glock carried IWB) I'd have to pull from concealment, draw, and fire - IF EVER. It's all theoretical but one must be ready. Just don't be distracted on the iPhone or not looking around at your surroundings with keys not ready to open the door, etc. It's those people who are not situationally aware who get mugged. Most people I observed are texting or talking on the phone. Those are the easier targets. If you're looking around being aware of your surroundings and walk like you mean business, you're not as easy of a target.

My point is find a gun that you are most confident and adept shooting, stick with it, and find the best holster that fits you, your lifestyle and your comfort. I wouldn't recommend compromising carrying a smaller guys or capacity for comfort, unless that's a gun you absolutely feel good about carrying and shooting.

Sig P238 usually. Smith 60 or 431 other times, all pocket. On the 3 hours a year it gets cold here, Glock 33 or 30, or Colt Officers Model. P64 in fanny pack for the gym or exercise. (I like variety...)

I EDC/CC a G-20. Its both an art and a science.
I shoot it better than anything else, though i will admit that after 15 years or so, I have heard good things about the subcompacts. I may try one. But the 29/30 is a no go, the grip just feels too short to me after almost 20 years with the g-21/20.

I carry a G22 all day every day no problems. the trick is to dress around the gun.G21 and two magazines on the opposite side.

Correct holster, mag pouches and clothing go a long way toward making what's on my belt disappear. Most people seeing any "buldge" will have no clue what it is.

Traded my G27 for 2 Keltec PF9s. I carry one everyday. In a shieldedholster mini while at work. Sometimes carry the G23 in either a Kelty shoulder pack or in another shielded holster. But yes the only gun I feel totally concealable with at work is the PF9'or an LCP that I had but felt it wasn't enough. It will be the PF9 EDC until Glock comes out with a single stack 9, so probably forever.

My Glock 22 is my duty gun, and off duty gun. I carry it all day every day. When off duty I carry it in a homemade "Crossbreed Wannabe" along with a mag/cuff combo on my off side. Shield gets cliped to my belt near my weapon. Chief's policy is weapon, cuffs and badge are one. If you got one on ya, better have the other two. It makes it a little cumbersome at times (expecialy Texas summer) and I do have to buy XL shirts instead of my typical L to cover all all the hardware. If I could ever find or make a IWB mag/cuff combo I could get away with my normal size shirts, but pant size would have to go up a notch.

Either way, I feel much better knowing I have 31 rounds readily available should I need them. For a little while I carried a XDm 9mm compact off duty, but felt like I might as well be carrying a squirt gun. Just personal oppinion, but I didnt feel like I had the right tool at hand, so I ditched it.

I alternate between carrying my Glock 23 and LCP depending on if I'm dressed for work (business attire) or jeans with shirt untucked. I'm looking for something in between and am thinking about getting a Kahr 9mm. I realised when I was getting dressed yesterday that the only way to really conceal my Glock 23 was to wear a jacket. No matter what I do and where I place it, my Glock prints when I move when only wearing an untucked t-shirt. The LCP is perfect for pocket carry but I want a more potent caliber. I'm on the search for a subcompact with a width less than an inch.

When I first started carrying I carried the G21 SF...definitely was large but I managed o do it fine.

I then went to the 220 Carry in a shoulder rig which I enjoyed. Being in Seattle I almost always had a light/rain jacket on throughout the winter.

Currently carry a Kobra Carry. No problem at all carrying it IWB.

G22/G23 in cold weather or fall/spring with a light coat or hoodie. Usually these are more comfy OWB. All other times, my goto is a G27 in a CompTac 2oclock or MTAC based on my dress. I'm 6'1" about 170 lbs or so.

I've carried a 4" .357 OWB, it required at least a light jacket.

5" 1911 OWB required the same. IWB I could get away with an unbuttoned shirt.

Kel-Tec P11 hid IWB under a t-shirt. OWB required an unbuttoned shirt.

Glock 19 IWB... almost can get away with a t-shirt. Really needs a loose-fitting t-shirt.

You know you can stick a G17 mag in that G26 ;) They even make a mag sleeve to give you a couple extra fingers of grip. Of course, kinda defeats the purpose of a G26 at that point. I have occasionally made my spare mag a G17 mag, though.

Kahr CW9 + Hume IWB 90%+ of the time. G22 in OWB Kydex would be my preference but lifestyle dictates deeper carry and the Kahr has proved out as accurate and totally reliable. 2nd mag always - where is also dictated by dress and life situation.

Kahr PM9, 9mm
S&W 642, .38
Ruger LCP, .380

And I go back and forth between the first 3. The LCP is more of a special situation, special event type concealment gun.

The PM9 and 642 are very similar in size and concealment.

I carry a G21SF in a Serpa most days under an untucked 3XL T-shirt. There is a mild bulge, like there would be with a cell phone. If I'm going somewhere where I feel like a mild bulge is out of the question, I swap to a DAO 2.25" SP101 in a Simply Rugged pancake holster, or just roll with the LCR .38 that's always playing backup in a pocket.

The guns that I've owned and carried in the past have been a G19 and a G23. I consider a G19/23 sized gun to be compact. I now carry a SIG SP2022 which is larger than the G19/23 so I consider it to be a full size gun since there are no smaller versions of that gun available here in the US.

I can get a full grip on the weapon, it has a 15+1 capacity, and its heavy but with a gun belt and good holster the size and weight are not an issue for me.

Subcompact here. I carry a G26 with a factory +2 mag. Spare mag is actually a G19 (15 rd) mag. All the concealability (is that a word?) of subcompact with the capacity of a combat or full-sized pistol.. (If I wanted to, I could carry a couple G17 mags instead of the 15 rd).

I have no problem at all with accuracy out of the G26.

i carry a sig p238 daily. i trust that a .380 will protect me if the situation arises. i would rather my gun dress around me than me dress around my gun, which tends to go against what most ccwers do. I cant stand wearing baggy clothes, everything i wear has be close enough to fitted. With my p238 i can wear just anything, including dress clothes with a tucked shirt like i wear on a daily basis to work, and you cant tell i have it at all. I can barely tell its on me right now, lol.

On-duty during a 12 hour shift, a standard duty rig set up with all the bells and whistles, of G22, 2 extra mags, a 20 round AR mag, expandable baton, taser, cuffs, radio, flashlight, latex gloves, etc. So I guess off-duty I am not so sensitive to the weight......5" Government Model in an IWB holster, 1 extra mag, a surefire light in my pocket and sometimes a Taser C2 model on my belt.....it just doesn't seem all that heavy or inconvenient to carry. I have drawn my gun dozens upon dozens of times and have fired in defense once. On none of these occasions did I find myself thinking..."Gee I wish I had something lighter, smaller, less powerful with no sights and a crappy trigger." Just my $.02. Ruger LCP with Crimson Trace laser always in my pocket in a Mika pocket holster. Can't carry anything else without a bulge that makes me uncomfortable. Usually a 17 in a Serpa over a t shirt or tank with an unbuttoned shirt over it. No problem about printing or showing cause we're an open carry state. IWB just isn't comfortable.
Wish I could carry one of my CAS match guns cause I'm so comfortable with it, but I don't want to go to court with the 2 1/2 lb trigger.

Varies for me. Summer is usually a G26, Spring/Fall is usually a G19 or G38 and Winter is a G38. The smaller gun is usually backed up by a Ruger LCP and the bigger guns are usually backed up by a Ruger LCR. Rarely I may carry just the G26 or just the LCR depending on what i'm doing or where i'm going.

I carry a G26 with mostly a +2 magazine in it and one up the spout. I have no desire to go larger. I shoot it just as well as a G17. 13 rounds is plenty of ammo for anything short of full on zombie apocalypse. I remember when BHP was considered a crazy amount of capacity. This set ups gives me one round short of crazy.

G27. I have a defender but it seems heavy.I have remoras and they r great. I would think with a full size like a 1911, one would need to where suspenders to keep it from sliding down/over the tire to the lower waist. For the summer I just got a j-frame so I will carry that in my pocket with NAA black widow for backup instead of having a speed loader.

My AR is located in the cargo section of my work SUV in a nylon case with a mag already in it, and I also have a bail-out bag with extra mags, blowout kit and other items next to it ready to go.

But I do keep a 20 round mag on my belt in a pouch that is integrated as part of my extra pistol mags. That gives me at least one reload on my person in a spot where muscle memory would have me going for a reload anyway. Also, in the event that I cannot grab my bail-out bag or become seperated from it for whatever reason.

The increased mag capacity concern I would consider, but the increased ballistic performance will be negligible at best. The great majority of defensive shootings will happen well within the effective range of a subcompact like the GLOCK 26. However, if you would like the added protection of more rounds, the GLOCK 19 seems to be the best compromise between size and power. At 15 rounds, it has the capacity of the full size USP and P226.

It's a Sig 229 .40 for me. I prefer the compact size for carry. It's a balance of size, fire power, sight radius, and grip. I'm not and have never been big on sub compacts with the exception of the HK P2000sk.

When I have my choice, It's compact's first and then full size followed lastly by the sub compacts. Nothing under 9x19mm though.

I cannot get into a sub. compact gun, mit's too large. But carry a USPc 9mm SS or a HK45c. Some use flat base plate's to conceal better but even there cannot with my hand's. So i cant my holster to conceal better....The smoothest .40 i have ever shot was my HK. The 229 i think is designed for the .40 as the USP...

G27 on days I'm not working. Sig Sauer 229 on days I am working.

Love the Glock. The Sig is DAO, which would not be my first choice for a trigger, but its a fine gun.

G27. So easy to live with. Since it'll take G22 mags, you can have your cake (light weight, reduced dimensions) and eat it too (15 shot reloads if needed).

Sub compact g27. I doubt that as a CCW I will ever have to participate in a shoot out at any great distance.

Our CCW shooting test required good performance at 60 feet. I think that distance is a good "head start".

Glock 23 Gen4 w/TLR-1s in a Safariland holster. I have no problem concealing it with a long enough untucked dress shirt or a jacket on. I prefer compact/subcompact when conceal carrying. I always carry two spare g23 mags

I have a 22, G23, G27, and G35. 99% of the time I carry the G22. It's comfortable and easy to conceal, and I shoot it well. The other 1% it's the G23. The G27 is a locker queen and the 35 is a USPSA Limited gun.

I've been carrying my 19 in a supertuck lately, but if I can't wear something that will conceal that or I need an especially discreet carry, I have a P238 with a pocket holster or minituck.

Same goes for me. Especially in the summer riding the motorcycle. Ruger LCP w/ CT grip:cool:

For me it depends on weather. G27 on warm days easier to conceal with no print wearing just a t-shirt and g23 if I am wearing some kind of sweatshirt or jacket.

For years I carried my G23 (compact) all the time, thru cold and hot weather. Then I bought a G27 (sub-compact). Carried it in the summertime when it was scorching hot. I foolishly sold it to one of my supervisors only because he was begging me for it. Now (until I get another G27) I am back to carrying my G23 full-time.

I've hit the full spectrum on this issue. I've carried a 6 inch 1911, 5 inch CZ P-01 Tactical, a full size Baby Eagle 45, a Glock 34, the 19, the 17, and the 26. By far the one I didn't care for in IWB fashion was the G30 due to my stocky stature.

FWIW, compared to my Glock 26 in the same holster, this thing feels half the size...
