View Full Version : I LOVE my 31G4 even more now...

...after playing with and trying to fall in love with a 10mm 20SF for almost 2 months. The latter turned out to have way too much apparent recoil in full-power PD loads, and that is due at least partially to the greater muzzle rise because the pistol is too big for my hands. (The 'straw' was the 20SF's throwing off the Glock taclite/laser sight just by firing the pistol, twice in one sighting session. The still-lit laser sight was tossed over my head and right shoulder. :whistling: ) I still believe the Big10 is the most-effective and powerful cartridge available in hi-capacity pistols, but it's NOT for me.

That smaller-grip Gen4 frame feels MUCH better than even a 31Gen3 does, the full-power PD loads shoot almost softly compared with the Big10, I'm much more accurate with it than with the 20SF, and the Barnes all-copper bullets perform excellently. How could anything be better?

Blowing up waterjugs has never been so much fun!

I like the looks of those. I may have to pick some up for my G32.

Cabela's still has them--even after I've bought dozens of boxes--on closeout sale for $20 per 40box.

They're loooong...
...and require more attention than normal to get excellent results. I have lots of reloading data if you want it.

I forgot to write that my PD load for the Barnes 125 achieves 1400FPS (@ 10') from a 5.2" Storm Lake barrel. It uses Speer nickel cases, 9.2g of HS-6, and WSPs. If you try to recreate this load, work up slowly from maybe 8g. It's highly compressed and works in both the SL and stock barrels, but it could be too hot in yours. My cases exhibit NO smileys, primers are not too flat (but they are flat), and twice-fired cases are still reusable.

I'm now down to 9.0g. of HS-6 with this bullet. Velocity at average distance of 10' is almost 1380FPS.

This makes me all the more anxious to pick up my gen4 31 this week!

I'm a big believer in the BARNES- X-bullet in DPX or TAC-XP form.

It could be the most advanced bullet design on the market.

Proven in more than few shootings (DPX) and continued use in the Hunting fields
shows that it works there as well.

Both tactical penetration and perfect expansion, but still pretty expensive for some

I also like the Hornady products like the time proven XTP and newer FTX.

Never seen anything like the HST or DRT out here.

Still, most any quality .357 SIG JHP load is good for defensive use.

I handled both Gen 3 & 4 G31's yesterday and that new grip is better. If the G31 is as accurate as my G35/357Sig, then this is a no-brainer.

Yes, the Gen 4 9mm and .40 full sized guns felt good to me when I handled two of them the other day,

Can't wait to get my paws on a G31.

I'm again wondering why DT doesn't load the 125 gr. Barnes?

Probably too long to get Double Tap level ballistics out of it?

Well, the longer one hangs around GT, the more you know that DT's claimed velocities are just claims and not reality. Try other small brands...Underwood?...for hi-performance PD cartridges.
