View Full Version : Colt M1991A1 Compact (Officers) help
Got this Colt M1991A1 Compact used on an impulse on Friday...
Broke it down to check it out, and noticed the recoil spring is pretty bent, so I researched replacements and noticed that some people say the compact model (officers) is supposed to have a dual spring set up in it.
So first question, should I even shoot it with the current spring? And where should I get a replacement spring from?
here are some pics of it taken down....
Thanks for any help/info about this!
You will want part number 42324
Thanks, still doing some research on the matter. Looks like some people are getting "recoil spring binding" and that is what is causing the spring to get bent out of shape. As cheap as the springs are, I'll go ahead and order a new one.
Ordered 2 of the 24 lbs. springs.
Wolff makes a single spring replacement. The factory dual spring set up was good for about 500 rounds. Even with Wolff springs I would recommend replacing the spring every 700-1000 rounds. 1911's are like Harley's and muscle cars...be prepared to diagnose little problems and be willing to tinker with them. The fact that you were already doing some research tells me that you'll do well.
I actually changed my mind last night, and ended up ordering this: http://www.egwguns.com/guide-rod-kits/officers-guide-rod-spring-kit-w/clark-plug/ from EGW, it's a full length guide rod set up that replaces all the stock guide rod parts. I cancelled the Wolff spring order. This was a little more pricey, but looks like it should last a lot longer.
Had a buddy say he put on in his normal Colt Officers model and loves it. Hopefully it will work out well.
But... since I still had the other spring in it, I ended up determining that I was getting some spring binding and cut off about 1.5 wraps of the coil spring, then bent it back into shape, and now I can cycle it over and over and it will not get bent again. I'm thinking the issue was the spring was too long, so it was binding up and causing it to get bent out of shape.
So i'll see how it shoots with the current chopped spring, and the new set up. Should have the new spring set up in a few days.
Was the binding spring actually giving an issue? Or was it just perceived?
The binding spring didn't let the slide go back all the way, the new set up does.
I actually traded that colt off for another glock and ruger 10/22 haha... g30sf.
