What would be your preference. I own a few ak-47's and a few ar-15's. I've already got a bunch of cheap to shoot surplus 5.45 ammo with no gun to shoot it in. I'm leaning towards the upper for a couple of reasons. I think it's a more accurate platform then the ak, and I actually think it will be easier to clean and maintain. Of course the downsides are reliability and it appears mags can be a challenge to get for both platforms. Love to get some other peoples opinions.

I bought two AK74s from Saiga and some surplus mags when they were cheap, along with a pile of cheap ammo. Finally got around to shooting it. Was super surprised and happy with the AK74. Accurate enough for my needs for a battle rifle and trainer/plinker.

I have considered and upper, but the cost and reliability give the nod to the AK platform. Also, I think the mags are more common and affordable for the AK platform.

If money were no object, then the upper may be the way to go.

CDNN has 5.45 uppers. I don't remember how much, but their catalog is online.

The Saiga (converted or not) is capable of 1.5 MOA. For the price of an AR upper you could own two Saigas.

The most effective ammo (and cheapest) is corrosive 7N6. I wouldn't run it through a DI gas system.

'74 mags work fine. Many guys on the Saiga forum report they will run even without a bullet guide...

Saiga is a no brainer for me...

Q1: how did you come into or why did you buy a bunch of 5.45 without a gun to shoot it with? Just asking.

Q2:what does the 5.45 do you can't with the 5.56 or 7.62 without the obvious current answer being shoot it. I get between all the calibers I believe it is the cheapest to shoot right now.

Personally I would get a dedicated 5.45

I bought the ammo with the intention of getting a sporterized saiga to shoot it. For a while saiga's in 5.45 weren't coming in and I started looking at ar-15 uppers as another option. Saiga's are once again available but have also been impressed with what I've read on the spike's upper, it's set up to deal with corrosive ammo, everything melonited, and the bolt nickel boron coated. It runs $620 at aim. Just curious what others though. I'll probably end up ordering a saiga that is already sort of setup for conversion like what atlantic is carrying now.

As someone who went through the AWB, I find myself buying magazines for guns I "might" buy. I think I've bought cases of ammo for guns I "might" buy.

Upper. Might also want to look at:

$499 5.45 S&W complete upper at cdnn
http://www.cdnninvestments.com/smwe5upnew.html

$500 5.45 at PSA w/ options
http://www.palmettostatearmory.com/545x39-upper.php

If you buy the Saiga if you shoot it you will eventually want to convert it.

I've heard good things about the s&w upper, but it's not protected as well for corrosive ammo, not that it matters because I would clean it properly. I'll just stew on it for a while before I make any decision. Thanks for the input.

At Aim Surplus, the Spikes Tactical 5.45x39 upper is $619, and Saiga SGL31 5.45x39 is $829. But I'd rather have a "whole 'nother gun" than just half of one. By the time you finished the AR build, you'd have about the same money in either one. I have seen AK74s and Polish Tantals for sale for less...
