QUESTION BOUT DEFENSE ROUND FOR EVERYDAY AND SHTF DOOMSDAY END OF THE WORLD AMMO...

I have a glock 17 that ive been using Winchester PDX1 9mm 124gr +P from walmart and saw some 147gr +p... Also saw many other companies with 115 gr to 147gr with bigger and smaller cavities... Which is better all around defense round? and also whats the highest gr that u can get in a 9mm? Is 147gr the most or they have higher? And whats the difference in power/Recoil...

Also watched the show yesterday Doomsday Preppers... Kinda weird but interesting... If SHTF obviously you wouldn't use a defense round but a FMJ... So what would you stock up on Nato rounds that are 124gr that military use or 147 gr or if there is such thing as somthing higher... Also saw on youtube they have 9mm Armor piercing rounds? And we know its better to have a rifle but just curious as a sidearm... And curious also what rifle you would carry for doomsday since glock didnt make one yet...

Whats the most powerful 9mm round in the market for JHP and FMJ...

I carry Winchesters PDX-1, and Hornadys TAP, and their Zombie Max. .40 S&W... every other round is one of the above...

Why would I switch to a less effective round during the time I'm more likely than ever to need it?

This. And keep enough on hand so that when shtf you have some readily
available.

I just picked up 500 Speer 124 grn +P 9mm Gold Dots and 1000 Winchester 124 +p 9mm encapsulated for training. And I too am curious as to why you would not use HP or SP in SHTF?

Maybe im wrong but wouldnt it be cheaper to buy FMJ around $10 for a box of 50 then 20 rounds of HP for around $15... If SHTF and doomsday arrived you want more ammo at hand and well who cares if it penetrates... Just my 2 cents but then again maybe im wrong... Plus dont the military use FMJ only...

I see what your saying and if the SHTF you wouldn't worry to much about your round going through the person your shooting and then into someone behind them. To me that would be 1 shot 2 kills and that would be a good thing in times like that...

I use Gold Dots in all of my carry handguns. Why? I've shot many thousands of rounds of it and never had a single failure. Makes me believe if my life depends on it it will go boom every time.

Old school Federal 9mm JHP +P+ (9BPLE). Cheap enough to actualy shoot ($17.50 per 50). Long and illustrious history with LE agencies over the past 25 years. Hundreds of shootings and a proven track record on perps rather than gelatin. Not sexy (bonded core, etc.) but very effective. A little over 1,400 fps with my G34.

G19 - Winchester 127 +p+ Ranger T
G23 & G27 - Winchester 165 gr Ranger T
G32 Speer 125 Gold Dot or Win 125 Ranger T

Gold dot or ranger-T. Those PDX-1 bonded bullets will have expansion issues if ur not going to shoot thru barriers.

In addition to being cheaper, the generic FMJ ammo is much more useful to use as target/practice ammunition a decade or two down the road when it comes time to swap it out for some fresh SHTF/doomsday/end of the world ammunition (you know just in case the world actually doesn't end in 10 or 20 years.)

Golden Saber BONDED is good stuff but the non-bonded stuff I've seen too many jacket separations in various testing I've seen online.

For Defense I generally carry 147gr Gold Dots.

For SHTF I'll take whatever I can get. I probably have seven different brands, designs, and/or weights of 9mm ammo in my safe. They will all kill Zombies!!!

Agreed. Gold Dots 115gr, 124gr, 165gr, or 180gr is what I use too. always goes bang.

Fed HST in all my guns. I shot a 230g .45 +P in a G30 completely through three one gallon milk jugs lined up in a row. The first two exploded. Found it in the sand much further back. It had a beautiful petal and was the size of a quarter, just touching the rim all around it. The jacket was intact. I didn't weigh it though. Looked near 100%.

I've also looked at hollowpoints for SD but after reading your post , it makes sense to have quantity vs quality.

Whats the most powerful 9mm round in the market for JHP and FMJ...

Winchester Ranger T-Series 127 gr +P+ runs ~1250 fps from a G26.
It's the hottest LE SD high tech bullet I'm aware of in 9mm.
http://bellsouthpwp2.net/s/c/scgunguy/rangercartridgeandbullet.jpg

My second choice is Speer Duty GDHP 124 gr +P
or Federal HST 124 gr +P.

Who cares? In a SHTF situation I will use any and all ammo that I own. I will start with the premium hollow points and when those are gone go to FMJ.

Just use any of the popular loads for self defense. Gold Dot, HST, PDX-1, Ranger, etc.

SHTF.
I'll go with my reloads. 125gr HAP (hornady action pistol) pushing ~1400fps out of my G32.

.675 max expanded diameter
.604 min expanded diameter

Guys, maybe I'm missing something. We're talking about total shtf,,as in teotwawki????????????? In this case, I dang sure ain't worried about a half price bargain bin at the gunshow ammo outlet. I want the same premium top shelf ammo i would carry if I were going out to the Steak-N-Shake. I trust it for mundane errands to keep my family safe. I wouldn't change out the mags if the balloon goes up tonight.
I do agree that in the event of teotwawki, I want to have LOTS of ammo available. I do indeed. And I also have lots of hardball too, FWIW.
Really, if I NEED several hundred rounds of pistol ammo, I failed to plan with enough rifle ammo! I got lots of that too. FMJ and Premium JHP both, thank you very much.
Be safe. Be armed. Be prepared. But don't overthink this gun stuff. Train hard. Put the bullets where they need to go. Front sight. Smooth roll of the trigger. And PLEASE bear in mind that a generator, fuel, a kerosene heater and fuel for that, and water storage and filtration/treatment along with food will be MUCH more useful than whizbang weapons. The guns are mainly to keep the other stuff.... Good Luck

The part the "preppers" is missing is how are they going to get out of a populated area with a trailer & SUV, aint gonna happen. Unless you are already living in a rural setting, you'll never get there towing a trailer full of guns, ammo, food & water. So your SHTF gear is going to have to be light & man portable IMO. Any ammo would do, any caliber would do. The object is to be armed. A 22lr rifle makes a lot of sense as you can actually carry 1000rds in a small light package. Backed by a good 9mm & 100rds, you are mobile & can be very effective. Staying in, any 223 & any handgun service caliber handgun ammo will do. This is where I wouldn't mind reloading my SHTF ammo.

SGAmmo.com has a nice selection of self defense ammo. The Winchester Ranger Tseries 9mm 127 +P+ is my choice. Can't knock the older Federal 9BPLE 115 +P+. The Speer Gold Dot and Federal HST are also very good performers.
