I was in WalMart looking at their black rifles and noticed they had two made by Sig Sauer. There was considerable difference in price between the two the most expensive was $900. plus. Are these Sig rifles worth considering or they something just made for WalMart.

The one looked similar to this picture. Being new to this type of rifle I would have to take a closer look and ask them to see the specs.

Yeah that is the 556 I think they call it, I have heard to many bad things about them. The do make an AR that is suppose to be pretty good though. The AR is so much easier to make how you want. With that rifle you get what you see.

I think Walmart carries the .22 Sig AR look-alike and the 556 AR. That would justify the price difference you mentioned.

The WalMart here actually has Sig-Sauer marked AR15s for sale. I looked and it was called a "Sig 200" or something like that. I will ask the guy at the desk to let me have a look at it again and post the actual markings.

The sig AR's that I have seen are piston guns. Not that there is anything wrong with that.

I think the 516 is a piston driven AR

The Sig 556 is an excellent rifle. The Sig 522 is a great range toy.

Bushmaster, Sig and S&W ARs are making their way into Wal-Marts now. Great to see the AR in such a mainstream setting IMO. It will help take some of the "evil black rifle" myth away.

The Sig 556 was Sig's failed attempt to attract the original 550' s fans.
The Sig 516 is Sig's piston AR.
The Sig M400 is Sig's DI AR.

The SIG M400 is a good solid AR. It is priced competetively. One of my co-workers bought one last year and I had the task of schooling him on it and setting his iron sights for zero. As far as fit and finish go, I give it an "A". As far as function goes, I would give it an "A". As far as accuracy in concerned, also an "A". If I did not prefer building my ARs the way I want them, I would buy one of these SIGs.

I don't want to battle it out with the haters that will be around shortly to tell you how sucko these are and they're failboat since they're in NH and not East Berlin or wherever Sig i supposed to be to be Sig, I ain't got time for the pain.

But they look and feel great to me and they have some real cool configurations. Short of making *EXACTLY* what you want by building or at least having your specs built out on an AR( Which I am, admittedly, the type of guy to like, you know- such and auch Specific Magpul stock, specific model, specific color, and specific grip front and speicifc back etc. et al) but otherwise, Sig makes some real nice configs I'd be happy with if I'd be on the market for selecting an AR off the shelf and rolling with it.

SIG rifles - real SIG rifles are great.

Bad copies of the AR and the abortion that was/is the 556 suck. What do I know? I only have a 556 for a couple of years. Luckily I got it for cheap.

I don't know of any major issues with the 556 personally. Have heard a lot of people gripe about them though! The M400 looks like a promising build but I am not going to spend any money finding out.

Just FYI: Owning & shooting the firearms you speak of praise/and or criticize is not acceptable on this forum.

My only issue with Sig is why go there when parts and accessories are so plentiful in the AR platform. Besides AR's just look cooler. LOL

My Walmart has a Sig AR and it appears to be a target model. Has heavy barrel and 10rd magazine. No sights. $917.00

Probably too expensive for what you are getting, but I'd have to see the specs.

personally i own a SIG 550 aka Sturmgewehr 90..
it''s the standard issued rifle of the swiss army (where i served)...and we get to keep the rifle after duty...

i can assure you that this rifle is great! it's very precise and light...the downside is, that's it needs a lot maintaining to function perfectly...

The 556 is a typical Sigarms story.
The first 556 had quality issues while mechanically they were good rifles.
Problems like paint coming off or parts breaking were all results of hiring people of the street who never built guns and poor QC.
The SWAT models then are from better quality and you can buy them.
Mine is actually quite accurate and a joy to shoot.
Also for a piston rifle which takes most AR accessories, it's a bargain from the price.

Unfortunately, there seems to be a MASSIVE difference between the 550 and the 556 in terms of quality and reliability.

I love my Sig 556. I have 1000 perfect rounds thru it now. I am about to make it my SHTF rifle it is that reliable.

I guess I'm one of the lucky ones too. I've got a SIG 556 that has worked flawlessly. A few small gripes, the overly large forestock and it is a bit front heavy. But other than those small things, I love mine. In fact I love shooting the SIG 556 more than my Bushmaster M-4gery or any Colt M-16 that I was issued in the military for that matter. Soft recoiling and runs just fine with no lubricant. Obviously others here have had less than satisfactory results with their SIG rifles.

I've always wondered... What are the major part differences between the Swiss 550's and CDNN's Sig 551-A1? I almost Snagged one of those from CDNN just to get something fun and different but wasn't sure it was that different or higher quality than Sig's 556's.
