I highly recommend checking out Bac's 1911 list. Personally, the Springfield EMP 9mm is one of my absolute favorite range 1911's.

My EMP .40 should be here next week. I'll let you know how it turns out.

For a 1911, I don't think you can go wrong with Springfield... and 2nd on checking out BAC's 1911 buyers guide.

+1 I was looking for a 1911 last year, and though I didn't get around to buying one, I felt much more well informed after browsing BAC's write ups.

Looks like bandwidth is maxed out on the pictures there.

Scroll down in this thread to BAC's posts if you want to see the pictures along with the write ups. http://glocktalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1269683

If you're looking for a good target pistol, I'd probably be looking at the entry level enhanced 1911s. From what I gathered the STI Spartan is a pretty good way to go.

The desert eagle 1911 was at the top of my list as well.

The first question is what is your price range?

Check out the guide in my signature. :)

The STI Trojan is the perfect $1000 range 1911.

Agree with Rinspeed, 38, and bac. Nothing else touches the Trojan for a grand.

STI has excellent fire control parts made from (I believe) S7 tool steel. The factory triggers are pretty good, but if you have a trigger job done, this steel will hold its shape a lot longer than the MIM parts used by most of the competitors in the $1K range. STI also, in my experience, do some of the best barrel fitting in the business. I've never seen an STI barrel-to-slide fit that wasn't tight as a bank vault and that didn't demonstrate almost perfect engagement of all the lugs.

I was thinking the same as Karl, the STI SPARTAN. Very nice pistol for a reasonable price.

please define target in your statement- ipsc/idpa, plinking at the range, conventional bullseye, cmp sanctioned service pistol- all have different requirements or limitations on guns. For a true target gun, I'd go for anything from les baer. Whichever model meets your requirements. I have one of the 1.5 inch package premier II's and shoot it in conventional bullseye, idpa, and carry it. not a legal gun for cmp service pistol so have another 1911 for that.

if you are willing to buy used, 1k puts you in Springfield TRP territory. I usually see them go for 1100 but I bought mine for 900 so it's definitely possible.

Agreed for STI ranger or trojan. They are a bit more quality than the basic 1911 and they won't break your wallet. OR it you are canadian, get a used pre-para-usa (aka. canadian made) stainless para ordinance.

I picked up a Remington R1...about a month ago as my first 1911
I wanted a 1911 that was made in the usa and would not kill the bank
Its a sweet looker and shoots excellent..600 bucks - buying a 1911 made overseas
is like wearing a USA flag hat from NRA that was made in china,it just dont work....
