I may be picking up a Springfield Armory M1A Scout tomorrow. As far as mags go he has a couple of different kinds on the shelf "price as marked". I have not taken the time to look at the different types but they are all in bags.
What type of markings should I look for on the mags to buy (the good ones)?
What type of markings should I look for to stay away from?
Thanks Guys...

CMI (Check Mate Industries) is the only current production mag I will buy. They are militery issue. If you can find some old surplus mags still in wrap (expensive) those would be fine. Any other mag is a crap shoot IMO. Oh, and I won't use anything over 20 rounds. Another crap shoot.

I'm using checkmate 20rd mags. No problems in a little under two years with them.

Most of mine are Winchester and Borg Warner.

Another + for the Checkmate mags from 44mag, flawless with my rifle.

A friend of mine has a M1A and all he uses is the factory mags and Magpull!
Based on the complete reliability of PMags by Magpull with my AR15 I would recommend you give them a try.

I don't think those mags are compatible with the M14/M1A.

Checkmate mags from .44mag.com are exactly the same mags that Springfield uses for their mags. The only difference is the markings.

Exactly! Those Magpul .308 mags are for the SR25/DPMS/POF/LMT/LWRC .308 rifles, not the M1A.

I thought my friend said he used the Magpul. If not that's my mistake, sorry!:embarassed:

Yeeesssss !! +1!

I put a lot of ammo through my M1A (I just love that rifle!) and these mags work. Time and time and time again.

Well said!!

And price!!!!
SAI magazines were around $50.00 apiece, the last time I looked. (That's been a while.)

Thanks guys.
I'm sorry to be a thread killer but...
I was considering trading my AR for a scout but the guy really low-balled me on the trade. It's a no-go. Maybe someday. And when that day comes I will be sure to stick with CMI!
Again, thanks guys.

Don't trade.
Keep the AR and get the M1A.

My VP at work told me this a lonnnnnnnnnnng time ago, when I wanted to get a new piece of equipment.

"On your request for equipment, do not state 'replace equipment' IF the equipment is still usable. On your request, state 'supplement'. You want additional equipment, not the same amount. More equipment. More productivity."

Same holds true with firearms.

SUPPLEMENT!!!!!

Teecher45:

Sorry your trade didn't go through, but you will probably be happier in the end keeping your AR and getting the Scout/Squad later. I bought a Scout/Squad last year, and am tickled pink with it.

FYI, all of my mags are USGI surplus: W Winchester, BRW S-1 Borg Warner, HRA Harrington-Richardson Arms, UHC (?), and a few unmarked ones.

Thanks Guys, but working for the state and having 3 boys it will probably be one or the other.
