I think I would have to vote .38 Super as my favorite 1911 caliber.

Am I alone in not voting .45ACP? Who favors something else?

I had shot Quack's SA govt in 38 Super, and that was a blast. I like it better than 45ACP.

The 38 Super is an outstanding round.

However, all my 1911s will always be 45ACP.

I prefer 38 super over 45acp, but 9mm is my favorite for fun.

I do like a 1911 in 40 S&W, but then a 9mm is fun to shoot also, oh hell I like a 45 also.
THEY ARE ALL FUN.

Just for shooting my favorite is my 6" STI Trojan 9mm. I find that incredibly enjoyable to shoot.

In a round itself my favorite is a tough call between 10mm and .357sig

Damn, that .38 barrel looks like a pee shooter compared to the .45. That being said the .38 super is a good defensive round also, although I prefer .45s.

The CQB Compact is in .38 Super, the big one is .45ACP. The Wilson I have on order now is a 5" .38 Super, can't wait to shoot that one cause the 4" .38 Super is a blast to shoot. Only problem is that compact .38 Super mags are not easy to find....in fact only Wilson sells them and they are cut down full size .38 Super mags made by someone else. They work fine but I would prefer a flush fit magazine.

Why put up with a round that is harder to find and more expensive than 9mm or 45ACP?

Also...isn't the real reason we go for a 1911, the 45ACP round? Having a 1911 in 9mm is like buying the V6 Mustang....not nearly as fun and not as reliable, either.

I have a very sweet shooting FN Hi-Power that fills my needs for a single action 9mm. It was designed as a 9mm and works well with that caliber. Designed by the same guy, too.

Nope...I don't get the wants for 1911s in other calibers....sorry.

What is wrong with the 45ACP round?

Blah, blah, blah...reliability...blah, blah, blah....

Have well over 5000 rounds through 2 of my 9mm (each) with no issues, and don't see any that will happen with my others.

Lew-G17
02-14-2012, 11:28
All five of my 9mm 1911's are completely reliable as were the other 4 or five that I have owned and sold. That being said, I have never had problems with the 38 super, 40, or 45 acp pistols that I have owned or shot either.

The 45acp is a great round, no question, but so are the other rounds mentioned. The beauty of the 1911 design is that it can be adapted to a variety of sizes and calibers, be single stack or double stack, aluminum or steel, etc. The pistol is a testament to the original design, which is why it is still one of the most popular designs around.

Caliber discussions are "no win" discussions. I am sure I will not change the mind of a 45 or nothing person, just like I will also not change my mind that all of the calibers, 9mm, 38 super, 40, and 45 make for a fun, accurate, reliable, enjoyable pistol.

Great looking 1911s :)

The .38 Super is harder to find in person per say but is very easy to find on the internet for sale. Price is the same as .45ACP so that is not a factor. The .38 Super is just a nice round thru the 1911 platform, smooth as butter. I also love the sound as strange as that may be. It is a bit different than the sound of the 45 ACP.

Nothing wrong with .45ACP, it is still a incredible caliber and I have 1911s in it. But if I had to choose just one 1911 caliber it would be .38 Super at this point. Not saying it is a better round but just that I prefer it. All things being equal I would say it is a better defensive round than the .38 Super :)

I don't know about you, but there are several gun shops in my area that carry plenty of .38 Super, all cheaper than .45ACP ammo. Not to mention the on-line purchase option.

I'm a die hard 10mm fan, but I must beg to differ with you.

The 1911 was made around the .45ACP cartridge. The .38 Super is the only other caliber I would want in a 1911....both calibers tried and proven for decades.

Lots of 1911 makers have had several problems with the 10mm round. The only other 10mm 1911 I would get is a Fusion Arms longslide. I believe they perfected the 10mm round on the 1911 platform. Oh, and maybe a Bren Ten for the display case. IMHO!!

Why did Earl Swagger, a decorated Marine, carry the Colt in .38 Super instead of .45ACP?

Besides, how can you pimp out a .45 ACP? It just doesn't have the flair...the je ne sais quois of the .38 Super.

Purists are going to hate me for this, but ever since the 5.7x28 came out, I though it would make an awesome 1911 cartridge. Low recoil, flat shooting, and even single stack I bet you could get 10+ rounds in it.

Back in the 1980s-1990s, there was a wildcat round which was a necked down .45ACP to .22 caliber firing a spitzer bullet.

Love the Santa Muerte grips! LOL

For a non-45 1911....I always refer to the Browning Hi-Power.

It is very 1911-ish and it was designed to shoot the 9mm so it runs better than most 9mm 1911s.

Besides, getting a 1911 and skipping out on the 45 is sort of like buying a Mustang or Camaro and getting the V6. Missing the whole point of said vehicle.
