So my buddy has a colt 1911 A1 5" barrel, now I'm relatively new to 1911's and know what model it is. He has this gun in like new condition with only a trigger modification done (j believe he put in some metal parts??) and is willing to let go of it, and 500 rounds of .45 ammo for $500. Is there any way to tell what model it is or do they have different models?? Thanks in advance and I will post pics when/if I buy it this weekend.

If the sights are simple blades (front and rear), you are indeed looking at an A1.

Colt's has always stamped the model designation on the LEFT side of the slide. So, what ever it says there is the model name. If there is nothing there, it is a parts gun and not a Colt's.

It had the blade sights and I'm not
100% sure what side it said it on, but I know for a fact that on one side of the slide it said "Colt 1911 A1" I have confirmed that I want it and am just waiting on a time when I can go get it since we both work everyday all day....

All we know for sure is that you are offered a gun with a Colt military slide. The rest of the gun could be about anything.
The ammo could be about anything.

A functioning .45 and 500 rounds of decent quality ammo is certainly worth $500. But we don't know that the gun or ammo are usable I would want to do some testfiring even at that price.

And be sure it has a serial number.

Just buy it. That is a smoking deal IF it runs at all.

USGI 1911A1's were NOT so marked on the slide- I suspect it is a 1991A1 but still a great deal. good rule of thumb any colt 1911 type auto in functional condition is going to be worth 500 bucks. Confirm it is an actual Colt frame (in civilian guns the colt address is in small lettering above the right grip panel)

Does the slide look similar to this one?

Seems to be more like the first pic, later today I will ask for a few pics from him and post them up. If it looks all good I've already arranged to meet up on Tuesday.
