I recently got a Ruger SR1911 and I need some hollow points for when I carry it. I have used and carry various types of ammo. For my .38 I have Critical Defense in it, for my 9mm I am using Speer Gold Dots, and in my Glock 23 I am using Federal HST's.

What defense ammo do you use in your 1911's?

I don't carry a .45 very often, but when I do, it's usually a compact, so I opt for a bit less bullet weight to keep the velocity up. I carry either:

CCI Blazer 200 JHPs
or
Fiocchi 200 XTP HPs

The 1911 I now have is a just issued ithaca, will get it worked over and carry the round I always use in my .45 pistols: Federal 230 Hydra-Shoks. Same point/print as cheaper ball for practice, good results in what I have shot into from test to deer.

Any JHP load from any well known maker is fine with me. I think they are all 90% equal at the end of the day. Pick one based on price, availability or a pretty box and run with them :) I am using PDXs right now because I got a good price on them.

I am also fine with FMJs in .45 ACP. I am not picky :)

Most commonly Remington 230g Bonded Golden Sabers, but I am comfortable with most any modern so called High Tec rounds.....Ranger T-Series, Hydra Shok, Gold Dot, etc.

Swamp Fox 165 or 180gr Gold Dots in my CBOB 10mm?

Seems like most people like the 230 grain. I usually use 180's in my .40 so I'm use to a heavier bullet.

WWB for practice, PDX1 bonded for carry. Will try Gold Dots next. All 230gr.

What NeverMore1701 said.

230gr HSTs, also, when I can find them.

For my EMP9:
PDX1 or HSTs in 147gr

HST when possible, but honestly there are so many proven .45 rounds it's hard for me to worry about the difference. I'd wager GDs, PDXs, Rangers, etc will all take care of a BG when needed.

I generally use whatever has been available as issued loads for our duty guns, meaning over the last several years it's been Winchester 230gr RA45T or RA45TP (+P version) or Remington Golden Sabre 230gr (non-bonded).

I've also used the Speer 230gr GDHP load, though, when I had an affordable source for it.

Of course, I've also used the standard USA45JHP 230gr load, which uses their original old-style hollowpoint (also formerly marketed under the Subsonic Duty product line) if that's all that was available at the time.

Given my druthers, I prefer one of the newer "premium" type hollowpoints that have been designed to do well in the standardized testing usually required of LE/Gov duty loads nowadays.

Whatever it is, it's mandatory that it feeds & functions well in my 1911's (and other .45's), in the magazines that I use.

I prefer a 200 SWC. Hard to find in factory loads, so more times than not just carry 230 ball.

Golden Sabers have a rounded nose and will feed in just about anything like a rounded FMJ. I think it is important to test at least 100 rounds of your carry ammo in a 1911. I carry 230 grain Federal HSTs in my Government sized guns during the winter and Federal Hydra Shocks during our warmer weather months. The HST are not supposed to clog with heavy clothing. The Hydra Shocks are proven police rounds. I don't have to worry about thick clothing with them during the summer climate ( I have read that the hollow point can clog with thicker clothing). I think it should be decided upon with the actual gun when it comes to a 1911. They are much more finicky compared to a Glock. The magic bullet is the one that has been tested in your gun...for what it's worth...

I use tracer rounds so I don't have to aim with my sights. LOL just kidding. I have always been partial to Winchester Rangers.

Hornady TAP 230 gr. +P in my SR1911. TAPs may not be the most modern design or the most violently expanding, but they shoot soooooo good, with no muzzle flash, and hot – 950 fps out of a 5" barrel. I also carry the TAP 200 gr. +P in my G36. No matter what .45 ACP hollow points I test out, I keep coming back to the Hornady TAPs. They just shoot so damn consistently.
