Why do people store their rice in mylar bags and then put them into plastic buckets with lids?
The plastic buckets I have, originally held pickles and the snap on lid sealed well enough that no pickle juice leaked out.
It seems that it would also prevent moisture from getting in. I don't get the point. Also, putting it into a bag means its harder to eat out of the bucket.
Because in the LONG term, plastic buckets are not water, light, or oxygen barriers, all of which are detrimental to stored food.
When storing grains and rice and legumes for LTS, the cost of O2 absorbers and mylar is so insignifcant compared to the piece of mind they provide it is a no brainer.
Once we open a bucket, and are "working" from it, we don't reseal or bother with the mylar anymore. Actually, when we open a bucket from our LTS, we dump it into a different 5 gallon bucket so we can give it a quick visual check, and it is one of the buckets with a gamma lid, the perfect thing for a "working" food bucket.

Same answer as above. The bucket keeps out the light, rodents and insects. The mylar keeps out the oxygen. This combination let's your rice last for 30 years or more.
