Newer one with polymer stock or older with wood furniture?
I don't know much about the new ones but I have an older one(made around 96') with wood furniture that is a fantastic gun. 7+1 capacity, smooth action. Just freaking awesome. I will never sell it. I actually prefer it over my Remington 870.
For $300 I would jump all over it assuming 1)It's in good condition 2) has the wood furniture.

This one is synthetic, i would personally prefer that over the wood stock
Shoot for $250. I usually see them going for $250-$275 (in Georgia) for wood models. I have a pristine 1300 wood stock/blue bbl/ 28" I got for $250, so you would think a polymer stock would go for a little less. The only long guns I own are Winchesters and love them dearly!
Holy crap.
$300?
Guess I got extremely lucky when I bought this beauty a couple years ago for $160:

I think that price is a bit steep, depending on its condition and how "used" it looks. I remember buying mine several years ago when they were still being produced, and I can't remember exactly how much I paid for it, but I was a broke kid fresh out of high school. I know I bought it simply for the fact of how cheap it was, and the reliable reputation it had.
If he is a good friend of yours, and you don't think he's hard up for money, tell him you found them online for $250 http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=274891478 and see what he says.
I can vouch that in the several years I have owned it, it's been a great gun. Simple design, and man does it just work well.
