How can you tell if they are the real deal and not some airsoft junk?

I'd imagine two of the fastest giveaways are the anodizing quality and machining marks, or lack thereof. If it doesn't come with the black plastic roll-up case and the rail covers, that makes it suspicious. Finally, price. "Blemished" M4 rails go for $150 direct from KAC. Factory firsts go for significantly higher. Much cheaper than that (unless you can be DAMN sure where it came from), and I'd be highly concerned that you're looking at a fake.

Edit to add: The M5 (rifle length) and RAS II free float (carbine size) are also available as blemished models for $150 from KAC.

Thank you
So what about markings?
Also is it RIS or RAS? rail interface system, or rail adaptive system? Or is RIS a DD thing only?

When bought new what exactly does it come with?
Thanks again

Honestly, it's been a while since I owned a KAC rail, so i can't remember what markings should be on one. RAS is what KAC calls the current models, and I believe RIS was used for the older models. The difference is explained here (http://www.quarterbore.com/kac/kacrisras.html).

From the KAC website, both new and blemished rails comes with the rail itself, and 3 11-slot rail covers. I have seen them before with an entire kit (rail, vertical grip, and a whole boatload of various sized rail covers), but I believe those were military seconds. THIS (http://www.ar15.com/archive/topic.html?b=7&f=25&t=318001) posting on Arfcom shows the kit I am referring to.

KAC RIS has odd number marking in the slots.
KAC RAS has even number markings.
