View Full Version : Daniel Defense. No More Bargains?

I recently bought a new Daniel Defense XV EZ AR off Gunbroker for $1066. I like to browse GB often and it looks like DD rifles are scarce there, and I even saw a listing that said that the XV EZ is out of production.

I took a gander at DD's web site, and I don't see any rifles in the $1000 range anymore. They are at least $1200 and up :wow:

Are they changing their marketing strategy or something? What's up?

I was thinking of buying another DD, but if I can buy a Colt 6920 for $1000 at Wal-Mart, I'll have to do it.

Can't go wrong with the 6920 from what I've heard. I almost got one.

From what I've seen with the DD, you're getting an upgraded handguard and flip down sights. So in all reality, it seems that you'd be at about the same price if you added those upgrades to the 6920. Just what I've gathered. I thought about getting the DD, too.

DD are good rifles, but dollar for dollar.......

I think there was a surplus of DD rifles for a while and thus some deals. Now seems that surplus has disappeared and prices have gone closer to MSRP. It happens in cycles it seems. If you want a deal now go with one of the quality brands that is lowest price. DD Colt BCM etc

It's no secret that demand has increased tremendously and the glut of supply is almost (or is) gone.

Don't count on 6920's staying in the ~$1K price range for long either... been telling folks that are buying these 'bargain semi-autos" that sort of resemble an M4 that the real bargain are the Colts, DD, BCM, etc.

But it's not going to last I don't think. Cost of manufacturing alone has been going through the roof.

I may bite the bullet and buy that Colt at Wal-Mart now. I can see logic in Javelin's post.

Looks like a Troy MRF rail and an ACOG in some kind of mount I don't recognize.

I think their prices have gone up recently. It seems like used to be able to get one of their BCG's for around $120. Taking a quick look around they are at $157 now.

I'm glad that I didn't wait on my DD now.

Some of it is due to SHOT show - distributors tend to clear out inventory around Christmas, and don't buy too heavily until they see what's new at SHOT show, then place orders based on that. Give it a little more time (assuming pre-election hype doesn't get crazy again), then you'll hopefully see prices stabilize and drop a bit more, and see more guns available.

I had an A1.5 rear sight from Daniel Defense on my S&W M&P15. It broke. They sent me a new one, the day I called, and had me ship the broken sight back in the box that they sent my new one in. Great customer service. DD is great, and well worth what they're charging now. It'll be my next rifle purchase.

That is excellent customer service! I do like the fact that they are in the next state to me, in Georgia.

Last night, I did some reading, and saw some negative comments on Colt's customer service. Some even say that Colt considers the civilian market less important at times. I would be curious if anyone here can provide any info on this.

I know that others will disagree, but I feel like my DD is as good as the Colt.

I feel my Daniel Defense rifle is better than a Colt. It's a GTG rifle, same with my Bravo Company and the ones I've built myself.

As far as the customer service, if Colt built the be all end all perfect rifle, why do they need customer service? The only reason I've called Daniel Defense and Bravo Company is to order more stuff.

Colt has had business issues for decades.

The business has split into Colt and Colt Defense.

Colt Defense is solely for military contracts (which have kept Colt in business for a century or two) and Colt Manufacturing is now (wisely, and a few decades late) chasing down the civilian market again.

They've been building a new factory in Florida to get away from the jacked up union labor laws which have given them so much trouble over the last sixty years in their current location.

DD's are nice rifles, i would buy one without hesitation.

I'm credentialed at a few web dealers and I can buy a LE6920 for $945 shipped. What would you do?

I'm guessing the ~$1k price on the 6920 is here to stay for awhile, since Walmart is carrying them now. I'm wondering if Colt is going to start selling to other big box stores, like Academy? It does appear that they are interested in civilian sales again. :dunno:

Buy an AR platform rifle now. With tax time and the election year boost parts are starting to dry up. We build AR's and had to hit 2 more distributors last week for build parts in addition to our normal supplier. We buy parts for 100+ rifles at a time.

On Sunday, at Academy, I saw a Colt 6920MP (MagPul, I assume) with an MBUS and Magpul furniture, no suitcase handle. $1199.
I'm tempted.

You would be better off buying a 6920 and replacing the parts yourself

Buds has offered this same AR for $100 less from time to time. Next time they post it, I just might pick one up..... ya know.... before the hype. :cool:

I suppose, if I could find a 6920 for say less than $1050. I haven't found that source yet. Plus, I'd hate to yank the carry handle off and just let it sit in a box forever (which is exactly what it'll do if I buy it).

You could ship the carry handle to me so that it wouldn't have to sit in a box forever. :supergrin:

Seriously, you could sell the carry handle for close to what the Magpul rear sight would cost you.

Ooh, I hadn't thought of that, I rarely sell stuff, but I guess I could ...

Here's a question: Could I put a free-float handguard on a 6920? I like that the A2 front sight is mounted to the barrel (though I would prefer a small rail on the gas block to put a folding front sight), so a free float could help the gun to achieve it's potential accuracy.

i was saving up for a quad rail and intended on the OMEGA 7" for my SP6920. i recently went to their website to pull the purchase trigger and they were out! had to go to a different site that has been less than favorable in their dealing with my purchase (waiting on a response from them 7 business days after online purchase). i was a little surprised to see the DD website out of stock, and i might just buy into this "AR election year scare" thing

I built a DD 14.5" carbine with a lightweight CHF barrel last year through Rainier Arms.

DD lower = $146
DD LPK = $86
MOE Grip = $19
MOE Stock= $115
Assembly = $25
Shipping = $8

$400

DDA4 upper= $108
DD BCG FA = $145
Gas tube = $12
DD 14.5 = $269
Vtac rail = $199
BCM M3 CH = $43
Vltor GB = $58.95
MagpulASAP= $27.95

$863

Pin FH = $40
Assembly = $100

I supplied the Surefire FH556-212A ($130)
as well as a X300, MBUS sights front and rear, and EOTech with a magnifier. Sling was $40 AFG was $30. The actual gun was $1,263 plus assembly and pinning of $140 unless you do it yourself.

That price, compared to a 6920 which everyone invariably swaps damn near everything off of, including the grip, handguard for a rail, stock, lose the CH for a flip sight and in some cases, dumps the FSB for a flip front sight... then you are paying a LOT of money for a Colt upper, lower, BCG, LPK and barrel. Just saying.

Pretty damn light for what it is. Accurate as hell and I didn't have to sell any take off parts or have a box of left overs. Crappy cellphone picture with bad lighting alert.

That was a price list I wrote up for a buddy looking to get a DD. That is what Rainier charges for assembly or at least what they charged in 2011. Not sure now.

I am a Colt AR-15 armorer and Glock armorer for my department and assemble/repair/destroy AR-15s on my own just fine. :rofl:

Moral of the story. For about $1,200-1,300 you can have a DD carbine done up exactly how you want it, or pay $1,000 + tax and add $200-300 worth of replacement components on a 6920.

I wish Colt would sell the light weight barrel version of the 6920 for that price at WM. I would buy one in 10 minutes.
