View Full Version : Mag extension for 18" Remmy 870
Sorry if this has been posted before......
Anyway looking for a 2 shot extension tube. Love the Remington model, but it's sorta on the high side. I've heard good things about the Wilson Combat +2 tubes. Can you guys chime in on what your using? My 870 is the parkerized finish.
Also I've seen info on removing the dimples on my existing tube? What's a good way to do this without messing up the gun?
Thanks!
Found a Remington factory tube on ebay for $69. Brand new in the box. Is that a Good deal? Seems like a fair price as they sell for $80+ from most other places.
IF memory serves me, Midway USA had Remington +2 magazine extensions for around $30.00, not too long ago.
Just for kicks and grins, I'd love to find a BLUED +2 Remington to go on my old Wingmaster Police (1980 model!).
Wilson's +2 magazine extensions get high marks for quality.

I checked Midway. The factory Remington tube was $65....
Still a good price compared to others I've seen. Thanks for the input!

I'm running the Vang extension and while it's $30 or so more than the Wilson, it's made from one solid piece of metal, heavy as all get out, so much so, that if The Duke were to start taking liberties with his leading ladies, I could club him to death with it.
Clubbing a movie star is a feature that you undoubtedly want in your mag extension.

I have the Wilson +2 with the sling attachment on the bottom. If I had it to do again, I'd get the one without a sling attachment on it at all. Great quality unit, I'd recommend it.

wilson all the way, only $50 and a lot better built than the remington OEM. Also, the remington one has a history of binding, not so with the wilson.

Check tacstar. I think they have them.

Won't own a Tacstar. Pure JUNK IMNSHO!!
I want the OEM Remington +2 or the +3. (I have both the 18-1/2" and 20" blued barrels for my Wingmaster Police.
I do have one Remington 'blued' +2, but, it looks closer to an "Express" matte finish than blued.
I also have a couple of Wilson's that are New in the wrapper.
I ordered the Wilson Combat model. Heard a lot of good reviews on them, so I got the +2 ordered. Thanks guys for the info!

I have a Wilson very well built and at $45 a fair price. It's so well built it's on the heavy side.
There is a few sight on you tube about getting rid of the demples just drill them out and file them smooth. Aippi vid on his web site.
+1 wilson combat here too, also here is there link:

Another vote for Wilson.
I bought 2 of these for my 870's, they are solid as they come and you don't need a brace or bracket in between.
They come with a new Hi viz polymer follower and spring.
I purchased the ones with no sling bracket, because I don't like slings on my shotguns. Here's the one without.

+1 fo the Wilson Combat extension.
I've been using Choate for 30+years and am satisfied with them.
Wilson, Vang, Nordic are all very good.
Tac Star are OK.
With any tube, regardless of manufacturer, should have a barrel clamp. Don't listen to the manufacturers hype.

you did good; i've got a Scattergun Technologies (Wilson) +2 on my 870P; high quality.
Here are good brands of mag extensions:
Wilson
Nordic Components - light as they are made from aluminum
Vang
Remington Factory
S&J Hardware (they also list some used Remington +2 extensions for $54.99)

Aippi (870 guru) recommends the Wilson. I got the Remington +2 extension before I read his posts. The barrel clamp certainly can't hurt anything other than perhaps scratching the barrel if it's removed. Not a huge deal to me. I did have to grind down the bumps in the factory mag and put some cold blue on the bare metal before adding the extension. Too much support is not a bad thing IMO. It's just the Wilson doesn't need it.
YMMV

Just part of the quote.
You say the Wilson doesn't need the support. Wait until you've jambed something between the barrel and extension and bent the extension and torqued the threaded end of the magazine.
I've seen it, so yes, there is a need for the support.

I believe I used a 7/8ths socket on an old extension and tapped the dimples out by gently driving the socket down over the dimples.I then tapped the dimples with a rubber mallet while the socket was in the tube and underneath the dimples, thus rounding it out completely.
You will know when you have it right, because the socket will fall and it should then be tested by reinserting the socket a second time. If you have it right the socket will fall completely through without any hesitation or restrcition in the tube.
Good Luck.

I used a drill bit just slightly larger than the dimples and simply drilled out the dimples. Smoothed it out and everything works fine. Follows appi's video.

I've got both the Remington and the Wilson Combat +2 extensions on my Remington shotguns (two of each) and I like the Wilson the best. The barrel band on the Remington will scratch the barrel and requires a screwdriver to remove it. The Wilson does not require a barrel band, which I prefer since I don't like the idea of needing a tool to field strip my weaponry. I prefer the sling loop on the left side (I'm right-handed) because it will partially block your weaponlight (in my case Surefires) if it's mounted on the bottom.
