Imagine the joy of going to sleep when it gets dark and waking up when it gets light
Sorry but when they say: "largest storm in 5 years"
That means there was a larger one 5 years ago and nothing happened. .
Now if they say "largest storm in 75 years", then I might worry.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing. My crap still worked 5 years ago.

Given it's a political season, with an incumbent who has no record to run on, I'm certain the media will be waving all kinds of diversionary flags so we're completely distracted and not paying attent...oh, look! :wow: A solar storm!

But captain, the earth's magnetic field is collapsing because of the polarity shift, we'll be sitting ducks!

Damn right.
What do solar flares do (if anything) to solar panels?
What do solar flares do (if anything) to solar panels?
Depends on the level of charged particles that get past the earth's magnetic field.
IMO, this will be yet another non-event.
I was just wondering if it was possible for a flare to fry an array of solar panels, or if they are particularly sensitive to solar flares / full-spectrum radiation?
I ask because I don't know the mechanism through which a solar flare can knock out a power grid.

The solar storm is what it is. We have no control over what is coming. Just makes you think how small and at the mercy of whatever comes from space.

I do plan on being up late tonight to try and catch a glimpse of the northern lights. They say they will be visible over a wide area tonight.
They are on my "things to see before I die" list
I'll find out what the effect/if any at 1600hrs.We use HF radios I'll see 1st hand what happens.'08.
According to the radio this morning the sun spot generating the storm is visible to the naked eye. Someone should put on some sun glasses and go check it out. it's cloudy here today.

Hm -- I have a sun filter for my telescope (glass coated with stainless steel!), and sunspots are almost always visible on any particular day. Did they say this sunspot was unusual in some way?
Did my best at a photo. Not set up for eyepiece projection photography, this is holding the camera up to the eyepiece and hoping for the best...
...This is unusual sunspot activity from what I've seen. A massive cluster of spots. Eyeballing it, it looks to be about 12 earth diameters (http://astronomy.nmsu.edu/tharriso/ast105/Ast105week12.html) across. Through the tele, what you see is much sharper and more contrasty. Again sorry for the quality.

Are we dead yet? Has it taken down the grid yet? Has the internet been overloaded(excluding the drag caused by introding the new iPad and iOs 5.1) and collapsed?
Just checking. I thought maybe I had died and gone to heaven and just didn't realize it. Of cousrse may I will just be imaginning your response too. There is not way to figure out reality. EEEK!

Damn it all...my cell phone kept ringing, my email kept coming, and our company phones worked all day. So much for a relaxing break.

I don't know. I don't have a light filter for my telescope so I have no experience gazing sun spots.
My guess is that the only thing unusual is that they're saying it's big enough to be seen without needing a scope.
