Hello, Got questions about hand gun silencers ? Are they illegal to own ? I see many for sale on line and need feedback on this issue.
Any info would be welcome.

Yes they are perfectly legal to own in most states. The process of buying one takes about 3-6 months and each one requires a $200 tax stamp

Not trying to be critical but I'm hearing that 6 mo is about the minimum. My cop son has purchased one and he says that LE gets no better or faster treatment than anyone else. Don

The wait time for NFA processing depends on lots of different factors, applicant's state, what forms you're submitting(form 1 vs form 4), level of backlog etc. Unfortunately the level of backlog has been building steadily since June/July last year. As a result 5-6 months is now becoming the average(I believe it works out to about 160 days), when less than a year ago the average was closer to 3 months. The ATF really needs to get more staff to deal with NFA processing

They have a very rigorous testing process with sound level reduction data from virtually every suppressor available. Most vendors have an active presence there as well.
