My next purchase will be a full-sized 9mm pistol. I want something that I can use for fun on the range, and that is fairly accurate and either absurdly comfortable or can be made so by way of Pachmayr. I would like to spend around $500, but I can go north of that if it's justified.

I've fondled many Glocks, but have never liked how they fit my hands. That said, they are fun enough to shoot.

For no reason at all, I seem to be something of a Walther fanboy. I've wanted a P99 since I first laid eyes on it. The PPQ fit my hands like a glove, but from what I've heard the recoil is a bit stiff.

Shot a Smith, hated it. Not sure if it was just *that* gun though.

Not well versed on Sigs or many other brands, and H&Ks / Brownings are well out of my price range.

I currently LOVE my PPK/S with pachmayr grippers. :dunno:

Sig P226, hands down.

Extremely accurate, absurdly comfortable, and supremely reliable.

Can't ask for much more.

The PPQ and p99 will have the same recoil. I own the PPQ currently and have owned the p99. Both 9mm. All comes down to what trigger system you want. The PPQ is insanely fun to shoot though. Recoil isnt bad and besides its a 9mm, so it is virtually negligible, jmo...

Whats the MSRP on the Beretta?

For the $500 excluding the Glock and M&P, the XD ($425 to $475) is a nice gun, the XDm would be about $100 more

A little north of your $500 wish list but have you considered an Hk P30?

Look into tracking down a new FNP-9. They are going for dirt cheap right now because of the new FNX series that is out. You can find them for $400 or so, and from what I can tell so far they are WELL worth the price. VERY nice pistols!

Not sure of MSRP, but Academy sells them at $579 in my area. Can find used ones in good shape for $450.

Beretta 92FS/M9 - new can be had around your price range, $500+/-.
Ruger P95 - new can be had for $300+/-.
CZ 75/85 - new for $500+.
Sig P226 - used, about $500+/- depending on condition.

Best of breed: HK P30 or P30L, followed by an old school German SIG 226. In polymer/striker fired the Walther PPQ. Bill

At that price range. CZ75. I would go with SA model for the range fun.

Or Taurus 92 series.

A used P226 could probably be easily had for ~500. The M&P pro looks like it could be a good choice for the range, although I have never shot one. I am presuming it would be better than the regular M&P which is nice at the range. A used 5906 or maybe a bit better a 5906TSW probably could be had in the price range or a bit less. My choice for a full size 9mm range gun would be a 952. (well except for the price)

For a full sized range pistol I'd easily say the CZ 75B would be one of the best choices around. It's super accurate right out of the box and is within your price range. The metal frame really reduces recoil and makes it a great 'range fun' type of gun.

I see a couple guys beat me to it already, but as I was reading your post I automatically thought of the CZ75b. All CZ 75s fit in your hand like you were born with it , shoots like a dream, and are about as cool looking as you can get.

Inside and out they are a work of art.

If a GLOCK 17 doesn't fit his hands, no way in Hades a 226 will, they're friggin' huge.

OP, have you tried a GEN4 G17? They're a big improvement over the GEN3s.

Its not that they don't fit - I actually have fairly large hands. The problem is the corners on the grips. Thay're in all the wrong places. I'd be more than willing to give a Gen4 G17 a go, though. Or a Sig.

My large hands have the same problem with many glocks as the OP mentioned. Sig P226 is probably the most comfortable grip, followed by the Beretta 92 series, than most CZs. But, how about a 9mm 1911, an RIA perhaps?

I'm gonna have to check out the Sigs, a lot of people have mentioned them. I'd also be open to the idea of a 9mm 1911, as long as the price is right.

In that order.

In that price range I'd say hands down the PPQ in 9mm for a recreational range shooter. I notice no recoil issues with it at all. My 13 year old ran a few hundred through it the first weekend we had it out and thought it was da bomb. I agree. It's a really fun range pistol. Going by fit, finish and features I feel like it's priced about $150-$200 less than I expected it would go for. A bargain.

My next runner ups would be an M&P 9mm full size or a G17 but neither one of them is going to have an out of the box trigger as good as the PPQ for paper punching.

OP: You may also want to take a look at the Sig SP2022 in 9mm. Excellent firearm, and you should be able to easily find one brand new with night sights for around $450 or under. Just as accurate as the P-series Sigs, most times with a better trigger, and costs around $300 less than comparable 226/229. Just a thought.

MinnesnowtaWild

I could not find a Sig SP2022 anywhere near $450 new, especially not with night sights. The cheapest I found new was $550.

Like I said, look at the FNP-9. They are going cheap.
