View Full Version : Favorite 147g powder/bullets
I switched my carry load to 147g after I finally found some Federal HST rounds, what is your favorite powder/bullets for this weight? I use a dillon 550 and my firearms are 19/26, I previously loaded 124g with titegroup, I like to use plated bullets and usually use frontier cast bullets from my local store, the goal is to try and get a load that will resemble my SD rounds the best, thank you

I'm using 147g X-treme plated bullets with Power Pistol and I'm very happy with that combination.

WSF, Unique, Power Pistol if you shoot outside.
TG is a gamer powder. Not a SD type powder.

I'm just starting to use some VV 3N38. I don't have a chrono but it appears to be a very hot load. It really puts the smack down on the bowling pins.
The VV manual states 1200+ for a 147 at 6.9 grains. I'm using 6.7 and it is plenty

GDHP over 7gr of AA7
Just a run-of-the-mill reload, velocity-wise, but 3.8grs. WST will push a 147gr. bullet to 950fps, give or take a bit. Plenty accurate and clean burning.
For paper punching and practice, Bayou Bullets over WSF has been hard to beat. It is an accurate load and doesn't shoot any different than 147 Golden Sabers.

Can you give me your powder load, OAL and crimp diameter? I'm planning to start loading that exact combo this weekend. Donnie at Bayou Bullets suggested a starting powder load of 3.5-3.6 gr WSF, OAL of 1.143-1.145 and taper crimp of .377-.378 using the Bayou Bullet 147gr 9mm.
mvmojo, I settled on 3.8 of WSF at an OAL of 1.137. I've gone up to 4 and down to 3.5, but like the overall feel and accuracy of 3.8 (of course, YRMV). Crimp was at 0.378/9. Easy shooting and very accurate out of my 9s. I'm with Donnie, though, start around 3.5 and work up. The shape of the ogive will keep you from having an OAL that is too short. Nothing wrong with loading longer as long as it will feed though your mags and passes the "plunk" test.

Should work great for plated too,out of 5.3" bbl, but shouldn't be much slower from a shorter bbl:
147gr Missouri hardcast, 3.5gr TiteGroup @ 1.140": 1036 fps avg (6 fps extreme spread)
147gr Missouri hardcast, 4.0gr WSF @ 1.140": 948 fps (30 fps ES)
TiteGroup was smokier yes, but more consistent and about 90 fps faster.
For JHP:
147gr XTP, 5.0gr Power Pistol @ 1.100": 1084 fps (10 fps ES)
WSF, Unique, Power Pistol if you shoot outside.
TG is a gamer powder. Not a SD type powder.
That's for sure - you're lobbing bullets at the target with TG (and the VV N320 that I use with 147s). Just like I like it! :)

Must be the lead - or I don't know what. I'd be getting right around 900fps (from a G17/34) with a load like that with CMJ (FMJ).

Thanks! I'm new to reloading and trying to collect as much data as possible on the Bayou Bullets. Looking forward to giving them a try in my G17 and G26.
3.6 gr of W231 and Evergrades 147gr FMJ set at 1.145 and crimped .377 in my G19 good idpa load...

OMG, that's way past major PF. I just ordered some 3N37 to try a hottish load of 10mil but won't be pushing the 3N37 that hard.
The best, or traditionally the most used bowling pin round is the .45. Low pressure, nice chunk of lead.

Yeap, hardcast lead and from a 5.3" bbl.

Great powder, I use it in the .40 for high end loads and it's awesome. I've tried the 147gr XTP load they list, here's what I got (G19 4" bbl)
147gr XTP, 6.9gr VV 3N38 @ 1.140": 1,110 fps (11 fps ES). Shot well, but it's a somewhat compressed load, it will begin to deform the bullet to get to the 1.140" OAL.

SARDG, I am not familiar with 3N37. What is the difference in characteristics in 3N37 vs N320?

VV 3N37 is a slower powder (than my usual competition loads) and should be better for hotter (hunting) loads out of my 10mm. Not as hot as some like it... but I should be able to get a PF of ~200 with a 180gr JHP. Anyway, thought I'd try it.

BTW, I have never hunted large game with a firearm - only bow - but handgun hunting intrigues me. Kind of like bow hunting without the bulk.
