today, hopefully (if they have it in stock) I'm buying a S&W 642(stainless .38 sp snubnose revolver) I think I am looking for an OWB, canted about 4:30 position, leather cross draw holster. I have a leathersmith that can make me a custom one if not available. When i say 4:30, meaning the grip is parallel to my belt so when I reach across my hand naturally falls onto the grip or if I were pointing my trigger finger with hand configured in the shape of a gun it would be 4:30 on a clock.

I have narrowed down my search for a holster like this because of the size of the gun, position feels so comfortable to me and makes sense. I do not have a big stomach in the way so being able to carry like this is very doable. Don't really like it on the hip , lower back, ankle. Second viable option is a jacket pocket or same position IWB. The cross draw on something that small just feels right.

Comments both pro and con welcome.

Tons of folks make J frame holsters. I'd suggest you go to www.midwayusa.com and peruse the selections and reviews:wavey:

Like I said, I can get a custom made holster, cheap too. And quality made. I don't want to get into a ordering spree only to find out it is not what I want or the canting is the wrong angle. Perhaps I will locate a picture and take it to the leathersmith and go from there.

This one is a Don Hume, and I don't believe it's been in production this century........but, something like this one would be exactly what you're looking for, I think!

The little leather piece on the back side, and above the frame/hammer stays between the gun and you is a good thing to have.........

Is that holster open at the bottom? My Sp101 has a 3 inch barrel and I wonder if it would work?

Now is that meant to be OWB, or can it be IWB as well. I noticed the reinforced top and I was curious. Does it have an open bottom that would work with a 3 inch gun?

It is an OWB cross draw. We could make one for a 3". That is for a snubbie.

Have you tried sitting with a gun in that position? Even a snubbie wouldn't work for me, but everyone's a little different.

I think you'd be better off to find a holster made for the 3" barrel specifically. Looks like Seth will make you a custom one that's just right.

The reason I don't think a holster intended for a snubnose would be acceptable, is I'm betting the front sight would tend to snag on the draw........

I'd get a Remora and carry IWB to figure out the cant. Cheap, comfortable, and secure. I get nothing for my endorsement. I'm just a happy customer. I have carried in custom leather for years. I'm also a big fan of my 642.

I'd just have something custom made. It usually seems to be the best option. I've heard seth's is really good, and I've got a couple products made by lobo gun leather that are excellent.

I just sold my model 637 because I didn't really need a sixth EDC. I felt the Desantis Intruder IWB holster did the trick just fine for an affordable price. I wore it at 4:30 because it seemed the most comfortable to wear and draw from. I will miss that gun but it had to go to make room for my Glock 35.

That is a sweet cross draw. I'm a big fan of cross draw holsters. I find it is a more comfortable holster while driving. Of course I carry several different ways. :whistling:
