View Full Version : Walmart and handgun sales...?

I have a few questions.

Does Walmart sell handguns?

If YES: Where? What kind? Does anybody know how many they sell annually?

If NO: When did they stop?

Over the counter? By special order order? Etc.

My belief is that they do not sell handguns and have not for years...although exceptions may exist in Alaska or the nearly unpopulated areas of Western states. I ask because I am in a pretty good online debate with an individual I know personally who is telling me Walmart does in fact sell handguns and is using that as part of his position.

I've been to a lot of Wal-Marts in MO and KS, and not one of them I've been to had any handguns for sale.

Wal-Mart has not sold handguns in the lower 48 in a long time.

Yep just in Alaska, I would not expect that to change any time soon.

Alright. That's what I thought. As for the rest of the argument I was involved in (on facebook) he is being a typical liberal and running away now that I have questioned his statements and asked for some kind of reference/cite/explanation.

Should be interesting the next time I see him at work!

Last handguns in Wal-Mart that I remember were in the early to mids 90s (93-94 or so) in Texas. Long guns are making their way back into a number of stores currently.

I heard from a source inside Wal Mart management that they are "SERISOULY" considering entry into the handgun market . There is just too much money to be made by blowing it off due to a few libs whining. They already whine about Wally World.

VERY early 90's they had a Beretta 92 in the store---that was the last and only handgun I ever saw in Walmart.

In the 80's I bought a lot of handguns from a Wal Mart in Arkansas. My local store had a very good clerk and he would order anything they didn't have in stock, and they were pretty well stocked.

But like has been said, in the 90's they went lib and quit selling handguns. That's when I stopped buying any type of firearm from them. Although every Wal Mart I've ever been in around here carries plenty of long guns.

I ordered a Ruger 22 / 45 from a WalMart in Florida back in the late 90's. They never actually had them in inventory, but they were able to order just about any handgun back then.

I think they should get into the handgun market. I bet they would sell a load of them.

They should sell them. Think of all the billhillies packin' Jimenez and Hi-Points.

i sure hope they don't start selling handguns, I would have to tell just keep half of every paycheck. I can't afford to go back to eating Ramen Noodles after living on Bologna and beans.

I remember seeing handguns in a Wal-Mart back in the early 90's or so. Or at least I seem to remember it anyway. I'm old and my memory plays tricks on me sometimes. So it's either "a long time ago" or "never."

The last time I saw Walmart sell handguns was around 2004.

Yup, all of my liberal friends do and will continue to hate Wal-Mart for any number of murky, ill-defined hippy reasons. I've heard that WM hates women and minorities, is responsible for every social ill of the late 20th and early 21st Centuries and has single-handedly caused the downfall of small business in America. Selling handguns will just give them another reason, but it won't stop anyone from going in there: the gun counter at the one I go to is the second-busiest part of the store and they can't keep long guns or ammo in stock.

You can down load Wal-Mart's gun catalog from their web site. No handguns in there. I have their print gun catalogs from the late 1980's thru late 1990's. Don't see any handguns listed in any of them.

As an FFL, the local Wal-Marts have sent handgun buyers to me for 25 years. Never saw a handgun for sale in any Wal-Mart in the lower 48. Not to say they haven't sold handguns... I've just never seen it in the lower 48.

I bought a .38 special revolver from Wal-Mart, but it was quite a few years ago........

In the late 1980s, I am guessing? I remember drooling over a Colt Officer's that was also in the display case at the time....................

Say 90's, some locations kept a separate catalog in Sporting Goods, and from what I recall, included a selection of pistols. I don't remember the distributor specifically, but prices were decent.

Never advertised publicly, no signs, but if a customer asked, ordering info was provided. I am assuming it's a service no longer offered.
