I know this subforum is designed for short answers and that a lot of threads here and elsewhere exist on the Martin-Zimmerman incident.
So a specific question: Would you advise friends or relatives against joining a neighborhood watch ?
I have never been a member, but thought about the question. I came up with so many "it depends on whether..." questions in my own mind, that I don't believe I would ever find a program I would join.
Yes, I would/will cooperate with the police and report suspicious activity, but I would not join or affiliate myself with a group. Zimmerman actions were individual in nature, but I can envision a lot of times where acting as part of a group could result in your being held accountable for the actions of the group. And acting alone means no supportive witnesses.
Then in addition there is the aspect of leaving your gun at home.
