Are you asking why they made the coin with more value smaller then the one of lesser value?

10-cent coin = 90% silver

5-cent coin = made of nickel, not silver

Way way back the 5-cent coin (half disme) was silver and was pretty small.
The silver 3-cent coin was even smaller

then they started using nickel for the 3-cent coins, and later the 5-cent coins. Since nickel was cheaper, the coin had to be larger to be worth the face value of the coin.
