If you could own one 1911 under $1,000 what would it be?

I'm looking at the Sig Scorpion, Colt XSE, Ruger SR1911 and possibly a Springfield.

I know it's a general question but just looking to hear peoples opinions..

I appreciate your input

Plain jane Government Model. Not even the XSE. Nothing wrong with the XSE but I really hate the front serrations and ambidextrous thumb safety. Plus the beavertail/ducktail grip safety does nothing for me.

For around $825 plus tax, you can have this beauty - elegance in simplicity.

You can't go wrong with an $800-$1,000 Colt or Springfield. That said, I would buy an STI Trojan. It is a lot of gun for the money. I view STI the same way I looked at Kimber during their first several years. They offer a lot of gun for the money.

i asked myself the same question just a few months ago. after about (3) weeks of looking, learning, asking, researching, i went to my LGS and checked-out a Springfield R.O., as that was the one i wanted.
right beside the R.O. was a Loaded - .45ACP, brushed stainless with wood grips and black adjustable target sights . . . that came home with me - my first 1911.

This is a great option if you like to tinker like I do but you probably will spend another $200-$300 on the gun upgrading parts to keep it running. For a low volume shooter stock would be ok but if you want any longevity out of the gun you really need to get billet parts to replace the MIM stuff.
Many folks don't want to mess with their guns so it makes more sense to just spend the extra and get something that's already got quality parts in it like a Colt, Springfield or Kimber. Sure, they probably have a few MIM parts but I'd bet they're higher quality MIM and they'll be fewer of em' too.
If I'd have had the money to spend I'd have went Springfield but with my limited budget the ATI for $400 gives me a base to build off of. Over time I can spread the rest out so that I'll end up spending a total of probably $650 but not all at once so it won't hurt so much.LOL
If it works properly that Kimber Custom II really looks good. Bud's has em' for $787 and with my $32 buck FFL fee I can be $819 out the door on one. Can't beat that deal for a good looking 1911.

:50cal:Yes renting specific models before buying is a great idea. 30 years ago it was buy it and figure out if you like it while shooting it. OTOH there was not a lot of variety in 1911s 30 years ago either.

For under a grand i would take a look at several Colt options , SIG XO. Own Colt Combat Elite, LW Commander both shoot great. Also have an older SIG XO GSR 1911 with the manhole cover which is a great shooter. OR for @ $1800 you can get a Les Baer P-II. Own one of those too and it is a NICE pistol. Take your time, look around and see if you can shoot some of these guns prior to purchase. Mimber NO THANKS; they are overpriced for what you get (paying for their massive ad campaigns) and their quality control these days is horrible. Although i do make some extra cash fixing Kimbers for the poor souls that get stuck with the lemons. :whistling:

Once a person own some model of a particular brand it gets easier to figure out which is which, at least for me it does. I have 3 Kimbers and one Les Baer and beyond that there is a lot of 1911s available that I would have to look up the specs on to have an idea what a given model is. I've been giving it some more thought and I'd say this would probably be my choice as well. All of the Ruger handguns that I've owned over the years have been nice and their Customer Service is second to none.
I had bought a GP-100, 4" at a gun show that the previous owner had converted to DA only. I wanted the gun back to it's original DA/SA and called Ruger up. They told me to ship them the gun and they'd take care of it. I shipped it out and then called them in a couple days to make sure it'd gotten there. They told me it had and they were in the process of working on it and when I ask how much it was going to cost they told me "No Charge", that was awesome. Ruger made quite a few points in my book that day.

I bought a SA 1911 GI and at the time it was around $550. I shot about a 3-4" group at 15 yards. I since then spent over $600 more to make it better. 3.5 lb trigger, barrel, bushing, full length guide rod, adjustable sights and now it shhots about 1" groups at 25 yards. Now I'm only limited by slide to frame fit. I'd recommend finding a gun with a good slide to frame fit and go from there.

I'd personally like to own a Para SSP single-stack with a power extractor. Plain-Jane gun for about $700, and torture-tested to 15,000 rounds. Can't go wrong with that!

Apart from that, I'd choose anything without forward slide serrations and a ambi-thumb safety. Those two things are all that are in my grudge.

I hate to say it, but I'd go for a Kimber Custom/Stainless II. I've had two of the SA guns, a GI and a mil-spec. Granted, they were "budget" guns, but the GI had FTF issues repeatedly and the extractor in the mil-spec was so loose that I thought it was going to fall out, and the rear sight did! My Kimber has tighter tolerances and better features for a little bit more, but still under a thousand. I don't particularly care for the front slide serrations, or the Swartz safety (not that I've had an issue), but all in all it's been a really good gun for several years. SO, to clarify, if I wanted a gun for under a thousand that I didn't want to work on, I'd get the Kimber.

The Springfield Range Officer seems like a nice choice.

I agree! It's quality is pretty good for the price range. It has everything you need and nothing you don't.

It's a fine shooting gun!

Great shooting and reliable, time proven after 6 years and 18K round.

You must have gotten a good one! Taurus 1911's are a crap shoot. You either get a good one or a bad one.

The one I had was a piece of junk jam-o-matic. There again, so were the Kimbers I had. :whistling:

I'm glad yours is a winner!

I'm confident that I find a Trojan for $999 somewhere.

I've been pretty happy with my Springer.
