Being on a tight budget and not liking the stock grips on my ATI I went a head and got a set of the DD's from CDNN for $20 bucks. They're nice grips, look good and all but dang, some of the pics ya'll post with your VZ Grips look so killer that now I've got it into my head that I need to get a pair for my gun. There's are the ones I'd really love to have:
http://vzgrips.com/gun-grips/1911-pistol-grips-1/elite-tactical-carry-2/etc-black-cherry-g10
Add in the Thumb/Mag cut($4 bucks) and a set of O-Rings($2 bucks) and I'm looking at $71 bucks for grips plus shipping.
I'd really like to address a few other thing with my gun first like changing out some of the MIM parts for higher quality billet stuff but dang it, those grips are just calling to me.

Crappy pic, but I just had a cell phone at hand. VZ Operators II in Tiger Stripe.

VZ grips are the best around, IMO. Some of the patterns look almost as good as nice wood, and they're virtually indestructable. Also, I gave up on O-rings a long time ago. I use Vibra Tite now, and it's fantastic. It's basically a threadlocker that you put on the screws, let it dry, and then screw in, so it won't run all over the place. Various 1911 grip manufacturers put it on their grip screw threads.

I also like this colors too.
http://vzgrips.com/gun-grips/1911-pistol-grips-1/elite-tactical-carry-2/etc-dirty-olive-g10

But I'm pretty much sold on the ETC pattern although I did see an ETC Frag pattern that looks pretty cool as well.
Loctite has also come out with a new tape that looks like Teflon Tape but it's actually thread lock. A person could cut that into smaller strips and wrap it around the grip screws and it'd probably work pretty well.
I'm also planning on picking up a set of Cylinder & Slide Stainless bushings and Grip Screws with standard flat blade screwdriver slots. I really don't care for the Allen head Grip Screws that I have now. Way too easy to strip out if you don't get the wrench down into em' all the way.
I'd also like to get a barrell/bushing/link and pin set up to convert this gun to 400 Corbon. It'd be perfect to convert all my small primer 45acp brass to 400 Corbon.
So many things I want to do, so little money. Story of my life. That's why I've always had to make due with less expensive stuff and just fix it up as I could.

VZ makes darn fine stuff but I have kinda gone full circle and prefer wood grips now. Tried all the types, VZ, Aluma Grips, those "golfball" type, CT Laser, stag, ivory, rubber and while they were great quality I just prefer the look and feel of wood grips. Might be different next week though as things tend to change in my mind about 1911s quickly

I just got these back from VZ yesterday. I had them bevel the bottoms. The 2 that I ordered are Operator II's in Black Desert Sand & the Black/Gray ones. I'm having VZ bevel the bottoms of those too. They said the grips should be here by Friday.

EDIT: Looks like you can't post pics here from flickr.

I think with the stainless parts that I'd like to install on this gun that these grips might look pretty good.

Yep, totally agree. The VZ Cherry Double Diamonds look a lot like wooden grips, so much so that it makes me wonder why someone would buy them and not just stick with wood since it'd be cheaper. Of course the G-10 is a lot more durable then wood, won't knick up or ding like wood will if you bump it.
Definitely not feeling the green but I have added these to the list:
http://vzgrips.com/gun-grips/1911-pistol-grips-1/double-diamonds-1/double-diamond-red-black-linen
http://vzgrips.com/gun-grips/1911-pistol-grips-1/double-diamonds-1/double-diamond-tiger-stripe-g10
And these are still in the running:

http://vzgrips.com/gun-grips/1911-pistol-grips-1/frag-grips-1/etc-frag/etc-frag-black-cherry-g10

It'll still be a while since I have a few other parts I'd like to get first.

I like the aliens because they are quite grippy but not abrasive. I like the traditional double diamonds as well. After about 6 sets of VZ grips on multiple guns, the aliens or double diamonds with thumb cut are my favorites. Not to discount the other patterns, there may be one you prefer more! Anything from VZ is great so long as you keep in mind that some are more abrasive than others and might not be as well suited for a carry gun.

On the thumb cutout, when I say it's a must, I don't mean that grips without it are not good. It's just that the thumb relief adds so much comfort I don't see why to not have it.

I have 4 sets. Three of my 1911s have VZ's. The fourth has a set, it just hasn't been put into rotation yet. My favorites are the VZ Operator II's with thumb relief. I hit these with about 4-5 swipes of a 400 grit sanding block when they come in and they are perfect. Carry concealed and still run classes with them. I have the Black/Cherry, Zebras (my favorite), and in the Gator Backs I have Green/Black and plain Black. The GBs are on the verge of being too slick after a year of use. I will not buy those again. Op IIs for me.

VZ Grips are great and the best part for me is they are local! I can go in and pick the exact ones I want and see how they look next to the gun they will be on. Also John is one heck of a guy and goes out of his way to help get what you want or need

I am ordering a set of VZ grips in the Hyena Brown ETC Slim Line Grips with the Thumb Groove in them & a set of the VZ custom screws for them also. They will go on to my new Ruger SR 1911 gun. I figure with the hardware & grips + shp it should run me apx $105.00 not bad for a good investment.

Be aware that the Micarta grips will absorb oil and sweat and darken, whereas G10 will not. The linen and canvas Micartas I think look better, but maintenance is something to think about, where the G10 is basically everything-proof.

I thought those were G-10? Glad I found this out before I ordered them. Guess I need to read a bit closer to make sure that I get the G-10. Thank for the heads up.

'Frank

Below is a set on my Colt. High tech grips with old school
feel & look. They WILL absorb oil & sweat. I actually like
that, they get a bit of an aged look to them, allows them
to get a but of character. Dishwashing soap, a toothbrush
and about 30 seconds and they look new again.

Yep, the ETC-FRAG Black Cherry G10 are my top choice. Still, there's something oddly appealing about those Double Diamond Tiger Stripe G10 grips. I guess it's because it still the Double Diamond pattern but the color is something you don't see everyday on a 1911. Lots of O.D. green grips, black grips, and wood color grips but the Tiger Stripe is different but not in a strange way like some of the pink grips are.LOL

crazymoose
05-02-2012, 23:35
The tiger stripe is an awesome pattern, but it's a LOT different than it looks in the pic you linked. VZ might have changed the color combos since I ordered mine, but the grips in the pic I posted are the Tiger pattern. Basically a combo of medium brown and dark brown. However, I see other pictures online, and some guys seem to have sets that are basically orange and brown. Dunno if it's differences in photography and lighting, or if the actual colors used were changed.
