I started out shooting centerfire pistols with a Colt Series 70 back about 1976. somehow other guns became more important. I didn't abandon the concept totally, one of my carry guns is a 1st gen Kimber compact. My wife bought a Kimber Ultra Raptor II CS last year. I even had a 1911 frame for years that I intended to "build up" for one last 1911. I finally decided that I might not ever get to it so I traded it off last month for something I could immediately use. Done with the idea of a full size 1911 I was. THEN, a couple of nights ago, my wife stopped by the LGS and was in a "shopping mood". Knowing that we have a few non-1911 .45s and the Kimbers she figured "what the heck?" In the case was a used, blued Springfield Trophy Match. In a "shopping mood" as I said, she was unstoppable. It came home with here. It has the "idiot mark" but external finish is otherwise perfect, and the frame rails still have 99% bluing on them so I am thinking it was fired very little.

After several years of double stack 9mms, treating the 1911 as a nice platform for a compact, I have come to rediscover the ergos of the 1911 properly treated. I think I fumbled around with a lot of other guns and have come back home. There are a couple of things I wouldn't have done, on theis Springfield but all in all I'm impressed.

How many others have "come back" to the 1911?

Yep, last one I had was in '04, Sarco Parts Kit on an Essex frame, simple, basic gun that worked great. Can't remember why I sold it, probably to buy a Glock G22 or something, seems like that was the reason why. Anyway, back into a 1911 platform gun and I'm starting to remember why I liked em' so much. Tons of parts available, parts aren't overly expensive. Big ol' 45acp round is the best auto ctg. going IMHO.
I think this time I'll stick with 1911's.

I don't know about "come back" to the full size M1911 since that I've always had one for the longest.

I've come to "discover" that the Commander size is better handling than full size and of course, much better than the compact model.

IMHO I think the Commander size is the perfect size for a carry gun. You still get full capacity (7 or 8 rounds in the mag depending on your magazine choice) and the 3/4" shorter upper just gives a nice balance to the gun.
I'd still like to get a full size at a later date, probably a Ruger SR1911 but for now my ATI Commander size gun does everything I want a 1911 to do.

Full size 1911s are my favorites for sure.

For carry I find it hard to pass up a LW CCO. But I'm with the OP, for just having fun the 5 in. 1911 is hard to beat!

I have always had 1911's. But I have been carrying a S&W 457 for a while and also a H&K USPc 45 and a G30. But after about a year or so away from carrying 1911's I am back to carrying one. I just shoot them to good to not trusting my life to one.

I put a great amount of stock in being able to make my first shot count, and being able to do it with an appreciable amount of speed. After putting thousands of rounds through my,

Glock
CZs
Berettas
SIGs

Witness
Taurus'
S&W
and even
Browning Highpower
I have found that no semi auto is close, in the combination of speed and accuracy, to my better 1911s. The fact that they will deliver a 230gn HP to the desired spot is "icing on the cake" so to speak.
