View Full Version : What's your "go-to" rifle?

H&K .45 AUTO

For some, it might be a Ruger 10/22. For others... A lever action or bolt gun of some sort. Mine has almost always been some variant of Kalashnikov. What is the one rifle you consider your go-to/SHTF/must-have in time of need weapon?

My AK47. Power, capacity, and enough accuracy to get the job done. I love the feel of the AK platform.

Depends, if its a animal in the yard, I'm most likely going to grab my custom mauser in 338.

If its a bump in the night/going into trouble, I'm reaching for an AR. I know it the best after 10+ years in the army, and there isn't a gun made I'd rather have in my hands if I'm headed towards a fight.

If we have to pick rifles, I only own one, so that means M1 Garand for me.

At the first sign of trouble, though, I'd run for my 870.

It's my only semi-auto rifle that's not a .22, so it'd be for whatever it needs to be for, it'd do it to the best it's ability, or I'd keep shooting.

I'd have no problem with grabbing my Mini14 or my 30/30 . Love my M1 Garand but the truth is it's old and is no longer reliable enough or accurate enough to trust my life with when I have other more reliable and accurate choices. More than likely though it would be the Mini 14 as it's a newer 580 series mini that holds more rounds than the 30/30.

The ONLY logical choice:

but the Norinco is hands down my first choice, and the ONLY one that I know works 100% round after round!

As stated...depends on the situation...but generally have plans to grab one of the AR's:
Armalite AR10(s) or AR15"s.
BUGS: Glock's (27 & 23).

Intruder in the house... deal with our "Early Warning Device" (Rottweiler) for a second or two...I will be right there with the 870 and/or the Glock 27 or 23.
Heck I might just "roast retinas" with the 3800 lumen flashlight stuff a pork chop in your pocket let the dogs go....might be fun to watch... J/K.
Love the 7.62X39 round too...regardless of the weapon SKS, AK....ect.
Strongly considering a SCAR in the near future, I'm "afraid" that I will really like the platform though.

My Marlin 336 in 30-30 would be real high on my list. Or the 1895 in 45-70 or 1894 in 44Mag.

I have never owned any semi-automatic centerfires or I might respond differently. I guess my levers complimented with my Glock 19 would have to suffice.

Same here and even though I have about half the TIS as you, the M4 platform is second nature to me.

Familiarity is essential when it comes to an adrenaline fueled firefight and usually in the dark or less than desirable conditions. Even though I know the AR/M4 isn't the "best" rifle in the world, it just feels "right" in my hand after lugging it around, shooting, cleaning, and handling it so much.

Not to mention, though not probable, in the case of a malfunction I could clear it and be ready again, in complete darkness, in no time flat.

I can get the G22 (among others) from the safe under the bed in a few seconds (7 last run). The Mossberg 930 (8rd) is in the closet with 1 lOck on it. - the Aar is there with two. Frankly I think my wife and I delivering 60+ rounds of 9 and 40 will eliminate the need to go to level #2. The 930 has plenty of buck ready to fly. I keep one 30 round mag in the safe for the AK. I hate to be awakened by a- holes. It's not something I'd recommend.

My go to rifle...is a shotgun. Mossberg 590A1 with an old 6P Surefire. Remember folks..."SHTF" guns WILL be in evidence for a LONG time IF you DO need to employ one. Realistically a decent shotgun with a light is all about 99% of people need for most HD. Simple bead sight. Cheap and effective.
I do think lights are an absolute necessity.

Now for end of the world massive SHTF? I'll take my AR carbine, with an Aimpoint, light, and good BUIS and a crapload of ammo. Cause when that happens...court might not be much of an issue. Oh wait, the wife will have the AR. I'll take the M1A :)

Haha, no video. But with low recoil, it could be done easily.

No plens to shortbarrel them. You kill the warranty, and between the ATF fee and the cost and parts, I don't feel like sinking another $800-$1k into that.

In 2008, I HAD ordered a short barreled receiver from CMMG, back when they were selling them seperate. After 3 months of waiting, I called to check the status of the paperwork. CMMG had mailed in their EXPIRED FFL license to the ATF and had to start over. I cancelled my order and got a refund after that (since they still had possession of the receiver)

A Saiga. I've got a few stashed in convenient locations. They're not in sight, but always nearby.

Love that Savage 24, Haldor. Great choice for subsistence hunting. Wish they still made them.

I have a 24V and a 24F, both bought new. Both have .223 on top. Things had gone downhill quite a ways when Savage built the 24F.

I should've been smart enough to buy a .22RF over 20 ga. while they were still making them.

Now I just need a suppressor! lol

VERY nice...wish I could afford to shoot something like that.

I must be really out of the loop. My 1st choice would be my K98 Mauser.

1911 gets me to either my Colt 6940 or my Remington 870... Depending on what the perceived threat is, i decide from there.

If we are talking strictly rifle, it would depend on the situation: indoors would be my M1Carbine. Outdoors would be my SKS. FOr HD, though, my choice would be my 1300.

I have been looking for an economical M4 with the A2 carry handle that is not detachable.
So far not a lot of luck.

Gotta build one, but I like where your brain is on this...

Go to hunting / woods rifle? 700 BDL in .30-06.
Go to rifle for bump in the night? Probably this AR.
Go to rifle for Red Dawn Commies? M14.
Go to knockaround truck rifle? Marlin 1894 / .44 mag.
Go to rifle for steel plates a long way out that need killin'? 700 BDL Heavy in .308.

That's a good looking rifle ZS.
I remember back when Bushmaster built one, but that was years ago when they were a leader on quality guns. I have come to the conclusion that I will need to build what I want.

Rock River makes this lightweight, mid-length, chrome lined upper. No, it's not a Noveske or LMT, but mine hasn't had a hitch yet, and it was built during the first Obama panic.
