I am thinking about buying this from my stepfather. Looks to be in good shape, not a lot of scratches and some minor surface rust. Not too sure about the caliber, may be 35 Remington.

I think it would be a good addition to my rifles for about $300.

What do you think?

If it is indeed a .35, it would be worth having. If it turned out to be a .25, .30, or .32 Rem, ammo would be a challenge. There are also some in .300 Savage, which is available.

I'd want to test fire it to verify the caliber and function.

The five extra holes over the trademark and the finish wear don't do anything good for the dollar value, but $300 is probably not bad.

The baffled me to "why" they would do that. Most I have seen on the net don't have the extra screws.

Probably for a scope base back in the day when rifles were not drilled and tapped at the factory. One type of Stith mount screwed the rear base to the side of the action and put the front base in the open sight dovetail.

Yep....side mount scope base.......too bad, as the rifle looks pretty good otherwise.

A .300 Savage just sold at my LGS for $325. I looked at it and the shop owner agreed with me that it was worth that to someone because .300 Savage is still an available ammo but it would have brought a bit more in .35 and somewhat less in any other caliber.

It was in about 85% condition with a well done refinish on the buttstock and forend

My sister bought her husband one in 35 Rem for Christmas last year. It was in great shape with very minor wear and a nice clean bore for $400. I thought it was priced a little high at first till I saw the rifle. Fun to shoot, I had to test it out for her before she gave it to him !!
