So my gun arrived today, was supposed to be the XSE model but they sent me the Wiley Clapp model instead. So did I get a awesome deal at $970 or what?

Is it the commander or full size?

Either way you got a smoking bargain in my opinion. The Wiley Clapp models have no passive firing pin safety, nice checkering and some impressive slim line grips.

You definitely did well.

Commander model.

Thats cool! They didn't want you to pay the difference? No kidding, I couldn't have sold that gun for that and not taken a loss. Was it the dealer or the supplier that botched? Is that really a botch if it's an upgrade? Just sayin...... I love the Clapp gun, personally. Everything except it's carrying another man's name and that there's not one in my safe.

Not sure what happend, it was bought off gunbroker it arrived today opened up the case and was like hmmm this is strange, did a google search while I was there at the gun shop and was surprised to see the model #'s coming up was for a Wiley Clapp model. I actually like this much better then the XSE. Only thing I can think of was that the XSE sold in their gun shop and they felt bad so they "upgraded" me to this model.

Yes, that's an awesome deal. Switch out the butt ugly grips for a good old fashion double diamond grips and you're ready to rock.

The Wiley Clapp model is a Talo Inc. special run. It's a Series70 Lightweight Commander with special wooden grip, small thumb lever.

Supposedly that's how Wiley Clapp wanted it. Besides, not everybody wants an extended safety. I don't know about others but I have zero issue with wiping off the small thumb safety on a draw. No need for me to have an extended anything.

Yeah I actually like the safety as is, no problems with anything so far. I know some people suggested new grips, any recommendations?

Congratulation, at that price it's a steal, don't shot it yet and call the supplier up and make sure that it was actually an upgrade and not a steal.

You know if the shoe was on the other foot kind of thing.

shoot safe, shoot straight, and have fun.

Yup already have done that, no answer back from them as of yet. I mean a gun shop shipping something other then what you ordered, I don't mean to sound mean but WTF how can you run a business sending out products that don't go to people. Your telling me that no one double checks that serial # is going to X customer.

Just saying, people do make mistakes, and a few hundred dollars under mistake with this one, if it's not an upgrade.

I would have to go with checkered ebony or VZ black sand for the grips.

EricandSuebee
06-04-2012, 19:19
So I visited VZ grips site, so the price of $65 is that for a "set" or is that for only 1 grip? Also what about a holster for OWB & IWB?

While I do prefer a slightly extended safety, I have never had a problem with the older style safety.

I just purchased a new set of grips for my Wiley Clapp Commander from Altamont. Your original grips have an oval shape to them which are very different to the standard 1911 grips which causes an issue for replacement. Your original grips were made by Altamont and they just starting offering this grip in checkered and smooth synthetic ivory. It's a great gun and a good shooter. Enjoy

I just want to clarify really quick, the Wiley Clapp Lightweight Commander has the standard M1911 frame, right?

If that's the case, then any grip made for a standard M1911 frame should fit.

Yes, your correct about the standard grips, they will fit because it is a standard frame. I was told that the screw length for the original Wiley Clapp Altamont manufactured grips that are provided on the Wikey Clapp Commander are different length because of the oval shape design of the grip. With all that being said, I think you just need to get a new set of screws or confirm the lengths of the screws if you order the non oval shape grips as shown in my previous reply. Theres a chance I'm wrong but when I did my research prior to buying my WC Commander, I found this info is a few post on grip replacement for this model.

Grip screws are dirt cheap, so it's good to know that the factory screws may be too long. That way when you buy the new grip, you can get new screws for it too.

I'm going to have to get a set of standard M1911 grip screws for my Talo CCO as well. The factory grips are a bit thicker than standard so when I put the standard Officer's grip panels on, the factory screws sticks out just a hair.
