View Full Version : Which of these 9mm rounds?
I currently have Gold Dot 124gr +p, HST 124gr +p, and Ranger T 127gr +p+. I have a G26 for EDC and a G17 in the night stand by my bed.
How would you utilize these rounds?
I currently use the GD in my EDC and T's in the bedside 17. I know shot placement matters and that these rounds are pretty similar but was wondering what what would be the best way to use them. Same round in both to keep feel the same? Is one better in the short barrel 26 than the others?
I'd pick whichever was most accurate in the individual guns and which round you can replenish cost effectively. I only typically run into the 124Gr +P Gold dot at the local gunshows in 50 rounds boxes so that's what I use in the 26 & 17. Given its street record I'd still probably pick it even if the others were available.

Those are my top picks in 9mm but I favor the 124+P Gold Dot slightly.

My G26 and G17 are packed full with GD+P. If I can't get it done with those, I'm in big trouble. I've never shot anyone so I'm going by law enforement street cred as to why I carry it.
All 3 are good choices. I would say pick one and use it for both guns. You can shoot a few mags of each and see how they feel and go from there.

Great selection, can't go wrong with any one of those. In fact, the only 9mm rounds I'd pick for a defense gun is one of those three.
Choose the round that works best in each particular gun and go from there. All three choices you listed are all top notch. I personally run 147 gr GD in my Gen 4 G19. And use 124 gr HST's in my new Gen 4 G17.
I'd take any and all, my personal choice is the Ranger T +p+ but all 3 will work well.

Those are my favorite three 9mm SD rounds.
I took a box of each and targets to a range.
Had a shoot off to see If my gun, in my hands,
appeared to favor one over the other in terms of accuracy.
My G27, with a Storm Lake 40-9mm conversion barrel(s)
clearly groups better with Speer GDHP 124 +P.
So the short answer is let your gun choose.
Anyone considered the new Hornady Critical Duty +P 135 gr.?

Which of those rounds feed & shoots the best in your G17/26, in your hands?
If they all work well, which of them can you buy in quantity for the best price (allowing you to randomly test-fire for function in new cases & production lots)?
As long as it's one of the modern, better designed JHP's I'm not all that fussy. Presently I have a sufficient supply of Rem 124gr +P and Winchester 127gr +P+ & 147gr T-Series (both the SXT/RA9T & T-Series RA9T in the 147gr). I shoot them all. They all feed & function well in my subcompact & compact 9's, and I usually load mags with whatever is closest at hand (boxes & loose).
I've used some other loads, upon occasion, and probably will again. (I found a box of Rem 147gr BJHP Bonded in my ammo supply, and I have no idea where I picked it up. :dunno: )
I'm more concerned about being able to lawfully, accurately, effectively use them in any of my 9's, if needed.
I think, IMO, that all above replies are good information. I like and use Remington Golden Sabre bonded 124gr +P to add to your list.

Same for me. I prefer and use the Ranger, but if all three feed and are reliable, then I'd be fine with any of them.

That is what my selection criterion would be, given that all three rounds are highly regarded.
Gold Dot, HST or Ranger T in 124+P are all great rounds. As said earlier use what works best in your pistol.
Gold Dot 124gr +p in my Glock 19.........

All are good rounds. Probably would not have mattered what you use for SD/HD. Whenever I see this type of threads, I envision trigger happy folks who shoot first and ask questions later. Not saying that the OP is of course.... Not sure how much advantage having a gun in the night stand would offer, but I can see a lot of negatives when trying to operate a handgun while half to mostly asleep.

My CHL instructor (an active duty detective) specifically mentioned in the class that he keeps his bedroom firearms on the other side of the room so that he CAN'T grab a gun while half asleep. At the very least he will have to get up and consciously go over and work the safe. And before anyone points out that you may not have time, well, that's what alarm systems and dogs and motion lights are for!

Those are the rounds I own for self defense as well, except the ranger T's are standard pressure 45ACP. I carry 124g+p Gold dots in my EDC gen 4 G19.
You can't go wrong with any of the rounds you mentioned, as long as they function is the firearm you are carrying them in. Besides that, you can't choose better rounds IMO.

My 17 likes those gold dots and federal 115 +p+ the best. The federal are in it right now.

Yea, because no one fumbles their combo just because, let alone when they're life may be in danger and they still only have seconds to react.......

I used to use one of those, but now I am carrying Underwood 124gr GD +p+ for all of my 9mm work. They go 1,350 fps out of my 4.6" barrel and hold together very well. Also, they are the most accurate 9mm factory rounds I have ever shot.

I'd really like to see tnoutdoors9 test this Underwood ammo. It's basically .357 Sig weight and velocity so the gel results should be roughly identical. The thing that bothers me though is the 9mm Gold Dot bullet is not the same design as the .357 Sig Gold Bullet for a reason. I don't carry unproven ammo. That's just me.

I don't know what kind of alarm system YOU have but with most you arm them and they go off when a door or window is opened, etc. You don't enter a code AFTER they've broken in!

We're on the same page here. I own two self-defense calibers, 9mm and .357sig and from what Glolt and Canyon Man have posted over several years with their hand loads I've come to appreciate the nuances of proper bullet design for the specific caliber.
As someone with no experience in handloading I wonder if the super-hot 9mm rounds should be utilizing the .357sig 125-grain bullet instead of the 124-grain bullet designed for that velocity window. My understanding is the 9mm and .357sig are both .355" so wouldn't this be a proper matching of bullet design/velocity?
Addendum: Another concern I have with ramping up 9mm to .357sig velocities is the danger of "kaboom" in 9mm cases not able to withstand the pressure of the case loaded to the max. Are there 9mm cases that have the strength to reliably contain the pressure some of the botique ammos are getting from their super-hot 9mm rounds? Being a 9mm owner that can shoot +P and +P+ I'd want to be sure that I wasn't endangering myself with a +p++ round the gun/cartridge case wasn't designed to shoot.
