Hey all,
Just got off Gunbroker, where I placed the winning bid for a new Vaquero Birdshead chambered in 45 ACP!

If you are not familiar with this model, it is a very limited run of birdshead grip Vaquero with a 3.75" barrel, and black wood laminated birdshead grips!

sharp, and best of all, chambered in 45ACP, a cartridge that I can actually afford to shoot (I don't hand load, and 45 LC is crazy expensive!)

Will post pics when I get it (a week or so...)

Pretty cool little gun. I'm jealous.

Here's a pic to tide you over.

Hey ZombieSteve,
How can you be jealous, if you have that!
What is that....the older version of the Birdshead?
The grips look different and the hammer is definitely different..?
Is that the "old" vaquero?
What caliber?
I will post pics as soon as I get the darn thing (a week maybe?)

Just a photo I pulled off the interweb. Most folks will start screaming if there's no pic in your thread.

I just got mine from Bud's Gun Shop.

Mine won't fully chamber cast bullets. FMJ bullets drop right in, but lead bullets stick out just enough to prevent the cylinder from turning.

This is a common problem with Ruger's 45LC and 45ACP cylinder throats.

Off the cylinder goes next week to Cylindersmith.com to have the throats reamed.

He just fixed a Blackhawk 45LC/45ACP that the same problem.
He does good work.

Otherwise it's an outstanding pistol.

Thanks for the heads-up!
I have heard about that problem, while lurking around on the Ruger forum...
I do not handload, so will only be shooting FMJ and semi-jacketed bullets for now....but will keep my eye toward getting the cylinder reamed...if need be.

I'm assuming yours is a 45 ACP?
Is it shooting POA for you?

Pics?

It's a 45 ACP and shoots about 3 inches high at 25yds with my midrange reloads. The main thing is that it doesn't shoot off to the right or left.

You should have no problems with FMJ ammo as it is .451 and should drop right in. Ruger sets up their revolvers to fire FMJ.

Cast bullets are .452 and that little bit makes a big difference.

Some cast rounds can be pushed in enough by hand, but most stick out just enough to prevent the cylinder from turning.

Cylindersmith.com will ream the cylinder throats for 42.00 dollars. Money well spent.

Thanks for the great info!
Someday, I will reload...and will need to have the cylinders set up properly at that time...
Should have my ACP in my hands tomorrow evening!

Just got back from firing the initial 120 rounds through my Birdshead!

Super accurate!
Hits POA at 7 yds (I know...7 yds ain't much...but I want to start close with this revolver and work back!)

super fit and finish, felt great in the hands...

full range report and pics to follow soon....

I want one of those little guys in a convertible .45 colt/acp to match my 5 1/2" convertible, which looks like this one:

Love the whole convertible idea, and Ruger makes good use of it! I would love the Blackhawk in 357/9mm!

+1

To the OP, congrats on the fine pistol! Really digging the barrel length.

Congrats!

I picked up one of these a couple months ago. It's a great shooter. It hits a little low at 15 yards, but a few strokes of a file on the front sight will take care of that. Should be a great woods gun this fall.

Fired another 120+ rounds of 230 hardball through it today!

Mine does not hit low...even at 25 yds, it is ON!

At ten yards, firing off-hand and semi-rapidly..it will obliterate the X-ring on a target!

Loving this revolver! And yes....I have carried it concealed..:embarassed:

OK...
Put another 150 rounds downrange today!
Man, from 10 yds out, this revolver puts them all in the center-of-mass!
Here are some (crappy) pics....gotta work on the photo skills, but the shooting skills are fine!
