After several years of my Sig P226-9 being my primary home defense weapon I'm going to change to a 45 caliber. I'm very comfortable with the large Sig platform and may go with a P220. I owned one for several years but didn't shoot it much and it stayed in the safe until I finally traded it.

Before I buy I would like your thoughts on your favorite full size 45 and why you like it and trust it.

Glock 21sf. It wins by default as it was my first gun(and my only "defensive" .45 to this day) when I got out of the military, and I didn't know much about guns other than what I was issued. I just knew cops carry Glocks and a .45 is a big bullet. LoL (not to say I regret it, its a fantastic gun.)

But since you already have a Sig, if your willing to stay in that pricerange you could get a p220, or maybe a HK. HK makes some good .45s.

ETA: I wouldnt recomend using a 1911(or any other single action) since your used to using a DA/SA, safetyless gun. The same way I wouldnt recomend somone going from a 1911 to DA/SA, at least without training on it first. They really are two different animals.

If you already had one and didn't shoot it, what makes you think this one will be different?

Only use I have for .45 is out of a 1911.

I have a Glock G37 in 45GAP. Purchased it to try out the round, and have since added the smaller G38, and G39. I use the bigger GAP for "home needs", and the other two for CCW. For 45ACP would probably go with the aforementioned G21SF. Feels better in my hand than the full-grip G21. Thirteen rounds in the mag is also comforting. I would suggest some research as Glock makes several pistols in 45 cal. I also have the single-stack 45ACP G36 for CCW. It is my favorite CCW, and am wearing it now. Good Luck.

oh and I forgot this one. It is a VERY good gun(at least my 9mm version of it is) and it can be had with a very sig-like controll setup(decocker w/o a safety)

If you already had one and didn't shoot it, what makes you think this one will be different?

Mainly the cost of ammo. I got to where I just shot the 9 more and got comfortable with it. Since then I've really studied more about ballistics and prefer the stopping power of the 45 for home defense. I do wish I still had the P220 but that's water under the bridge

I'd say if you studied ballistics, you'd accept that you're not getting much improvement in .45 from 9mm.

USP45 or the Hk45. Both are amazing and a dream to shoot.

If you don't want a USP or 1911, you can't go wrong with the P220. Probably one of the best .45 full size pistols out there.

The P220 is a great gun to me. So is the USP. I would feel more than adequately protected at home by the Ruger 1911 or my M&P 45 or an S&W 1911. But I am not certain at all especially with some recent advances that a .45 offers anything substantially better than does the better 9mm ammunition.

For me it would be a Glock 21 or FNP-45

I have always liked the 45ACP and I have always liked S&W. I carried a 4506 for many years but now if I were to rearm myself for HD or police work it would be a S&W M&P 45. Great gun.

My close second choice would be a new Beretta Px4 Storm Pistol in 45. Before the S&W 45 I carried a Beretta and like their quality.

Of course now I also have a Glock 21sf, which is hard to beat.

That's my two cents!!!

The .45 acp cartridge, to me, just screams out for a 1911, as others have said. If that's not to your liking, I would wait just a bit and go gen4 glock 30. If you don't wanna wait, then I'd say g30sf or xd. Be safe.

I love my P220, it is my favorite range gun and serves as my HD weapon with a TLR-1 attached. I actually prefer it to my 1911. It has been very accurate and crazy reliable, only a couple of jams in 5K+ rounds over the years.

If you are already familiar with the P226 (which I also own and love) the P220 is a great choice. The thin grip of the P220 feels better in my hand than my P226, plus you are already familiar with DA/SA decocker Sig platform.

Not a good pic, but here is mine. She sits on my nightstand with three spare mags nearby everynight, and I feel well protected.

My FNP45 sits on the table by the bed each night. It earned that spot by beating the G21SF & HK45 in accuracy, capacity and reliability.

Since you did mention .45ACP for home defense I would choose the G21 loaded w/Winchester Ranger T +P! Nice and reliable and great stopping power. Now this is only my opinion!

I love my USP Compact .45. Not a single malfunction for 2000 rounds.Get ready to pay for ammo though, .45 is pricey these days.

G21 gets my vote.

I've got an LE trade-in G21 (not SF, but the 2X4 full size grip) with TruGlo TFO g/g night sights and a Crimson Trace Rail Master installed that stands watch as my nightstand pistol. Hornady Critical Defense 185 gr ammo in the pipe and the magazines.

I also have a G21 Gen4, but really enjoy shooting it a lot, so I use it for testing the loads I develop out in the garage.

My second choice in Glock .45 would be the G37. However, it is also being used at the range.

If you're going to be using it as a nightstand/HD firearm, you may want to consider a light or laser (or both) to help give you an advantage over the bad guys. Let us know what you end up going with.

http://www.cz-usa.com/products/view/cz-97-bd/I can 2nd that. I have the 97b with the safety but would love to one day get the BD with the decocker. I also have the Sig220 Combat love that gun as well. But I think the CZ out shoots the Sig most of the time. The CZ is bigger & heaver then the Sig but I do carry it also. But I always carry full size big guns. One thing about the CZ97 is you really need to have big hangs.IMO I do so its fit's my hands well. CZ as 10 round mags vs Sig 8 rounds.

- 1911 Full size (pick your brand)

- CZ 97

My favorite .45 is the WC Supergrade Compact. A very well built tool.

Second would be the S&W 25-2 Custom that Randy Lee converted. 4 1/2 pound DA trigger pull.

I've had most of these listed, I still have a couple good 1911's and an M&P 45. Hard to argue with a Glock though and or a Sig, I want to try a P220 bad.

Glock 21sf is probably my favorite. Smooth shooting, utterly reliable and 14 rounds of .45 Auto. Mine has night sights. It is my bedside pistol.

Also have a P220 and love that too. The only reason it's not my bedside gun is because it cost more than the 21 and holds 9 rounds.

Why hasn't the call gone out for the G30???? I "think" I want one but only if it's on par with the other Glock 45's. What do you say pro or con please?

Which 45 Auto?
......primary home defense weapon
For me, it's either the Ruger P90 or the G21 Gen4. My reasons: Reliable and comfortable.
Either one is always next to me at home.

If you have practiced and are comfortable with the SA/DA Sig, get the 220. No sense in re-inventing the wheel.

1. HK 45. Tough as nails, accurate as a custom 1911, and reliable as hell.

2. Sig 220. Same as above.

Which is better? I would take the HK over the Sig (I can't believe I said that) in this case simply from a maintenance stand point. The HK will require a heck alot less of it.

Other than that, it comes down to preference. Both are fine weapons.

That is a great home defense package. I have a G19 with a TLR myself. I am a 9mm. man to the core but .45 is a very proven problem solver. For myself I would never have a 1911 for home defense. It is a legendary weapon but I prefer no safeties. It is one less step to take and it could be easily forgotten when your adrenaline is going. The 220, USP's, or any Glock .45 would do well.
