View Full Version : What is the Cleanest .22LR?

I tried out many different brands of .22LR ammo in my new GSG AK the past two Sundays (I know, SHOCKER!! I went shooting two weekends in a row!) and between them they REALLY clogged it up good!

My thinking is the Mini-Mags are the cleanest but I am not a .22LR ammo expert.

The majority were lead round nose or HP.

So, what say you? What would you shoot if you didn't want to dirty up your rifle?

Thanks!

Not scientific, but CCI plated stuff seems pretty clean in my guns, which why it's pretty much all I use now.

cci mini mags all the way!
36 gr brass hp at walmart for $6.97 per 100.
a few pennies more per round than the bulk stuff, but a lot cleaner and i've never had a missfire.

CCI Minimag
The Eley Sport Green Box is probably one of the better non-plated brands.

Clean shooting 22 rimfire is an oxymoron!

Don't let dirty 22 ammo bug you. I used to clean my 22's after every outing. Then I read that you put more wear on cleaning a 22 than actually shooting it will do. Now I only clean them when they need it such as malfuntioning. I own over three dozen types of rimfire so this save me a lot of time. I also learned that a lot of 22's keep shooting even though they seem dirty. I do buy 22 ammo by the 5000 round case. I get Winchester 22 Power Point 40 Gr HP and CCI Mini Mag. I also prefer Remington Golden bulk over the others. It is not clean either but seems to function over all the best.

The biggest problem I have encounter with dirty 22 ammo is in revolvers. When shooting a lot in a revolver I will have to clean the chambers to make ejection easier. When this happens I spray the cylinder with an all in one lubricant and cleaner. I then run a brush in all the chambers and wipe everything down with a rag and go back to shooting.

WOW! Thanks for the info!

I do like the Golden Bullet Rems, they did very well in it! I will definitely be buying more Mini-Mags when I get some extra cash.

Thanks again:wavey:

Try Winchester M22, I like it better than Mini-Mags.

I have always found Winchester Super X to be the cleanest I have ever shot.

YIKES!:wow: That stuff isn't cheap!

It's twice the cost of the Mini-Mags.

Yep, that seems to be the consensus, so I think I am going to stick with them.

One problem though.....

What do I do with the 5000 rounds of Centurion that I bought?:crying:

Shoot it up in a Ruger 10-22 or MK I,II or III. Use in bolt action, pump or lever action. It can't be that bad.

If it is then sell or trade at next gun show. "I have this single shot 22 rifle with a life time supply of ammo".
