I'm just sitting here enjoying a nice beverage and realxing after a hot (but short) day at the range. Anyway, I decided to practice my photography skills (which are mediocre at berst). FWIW, I took this picture before drinking and making sure that the gun was unloaded. Anyway, enjoy.

Nice pic. I love Maker's Mark - have even toured the distillery - and I'm a big fan of Sig Arms - have been to the factory and offices in Exeter, NH. However, I feel that firearms and alcohol are a bad combination. With a momentary lapse of focus, accidents happen with gunds - and alcohol consumption compromises focus, in my experience.

Good photo, disclaimer withstanding.

I could not agree with you more. However, I clearly stated that I took this picture with an unloaded firearm and before drinking. I pride myself on being very safe with firearms.

What do you do if after you had a few drinks you hear glass breaking at the rear of you house and you gun is unloaded? I'm not trying to be critical just asking. I don't drink now but I use to and I don't condem anyone for taking a drink, but shouldn't you be ready to protect yourself even if drinking? I would leave it loaded but in a safe place and only touch it if it was an emergency.
As I said before I don't mean to sound critical just wondering what you and others think about protecting yourself while drinking.

I respect your opinion but in all honesty I limit myself to one drink per night, rarely two. In any event I agree that an unloaded gun is all but broken, but it is not the only gun that I possess and for the sake of this picture it was not serving time on my night stand for HD purposes. I'm not trying to provoke an argument here, just responding to your good post. The bottom line here is that I am always prepared to defend my wife and household should the poop hit the fan.

Finally, it is this kind of thought-provoking discussion that proves the value of forums like this.

I don't presume to speak for the OP, but what he stated in his post was that he made sure the gun was unloaded before taking the pic of it and the bottle. I would not assume that the gun stayed unloaded after he was done goofing around with it and the camera. So, I would suggest if the need arose, he probably would be able to produce a loaded weapon to deal with said need.

Not trying to start an arguement in any way. It's just that you stated the gun was unloaded as if you would be berated for taking a drink with a loaded gun and you may have been, just not by me.
I'm speaking in general not to you personally when I say it is something to consider when drinking. What if something does happen and you are forced to defend yourself. How would the police react to the smell of alcohol? I have been in a situation before where they assumed I was the guilty party because I had been drinking.(no guns involved)

Redheadhunter21
07-08-2012, 13:58
I look at it this way, if you go out shooting and are drinking you have just made a decision that could very well be your last or the demise of another. Now sitting around at the house or having some drinks while armed is all good if you know your limits, but with a lot of people not knowing how to control themselves after ingesting alcohol, I understand some of laws enacted. Now in case of self defense it's gonna come down to the evidence the jurry sees if your not stumbling around and reeking of alcohol, then it will never make it into a cops report.

It all comes down to drinking responsibly, and really how effective do you think you are gonna be against an attack I your life if your wasted

Your post suggests that someone who defends him/herself in their own home could never have a drink because the intruder might violate their home after they had a evening glass of wine.

Not reasonable at all. If the homeowner was staggering drunk and failed to adhere to the law that would be one thing but a scent of alcohol, not hardly. Don

Yeah.......thanks, I'm mainly looking at the pictures.

I guess I should clarify things a little.........What I do is not a statement about what anyone else does. Everyone has the right to conduct their own lives as they choose, but alcohol is something I did overdo at one time, and it's a necessity for me to not have alcohol. For the past 12 years, I do purchase a bottle of whisky on new year's day.......I drink, I get drunk, I fall down, I remember very little of what I did the day afterwards! I am completely alcohol free until next new year's day!

I probably shouldn't have said a word in this thread, but in a moment of.....?......whatever it was that made me post........I did, and can't back-pedal from it. Again, whatever anyone else does is their business, and I apologize to anyone who thought I was passing judgement on their choices in life.

I love Tequilla. I love guns. I love shooting them both. Philosophically and esthetically the two seem like natural go-togethers because shooting both or either of them inspires, in me at least, feelings of joy, serenity, satisfaction and over all euphoria and well being.

But the cold hard truth is that they do NOT go together. I know there are a lot of folks in here that can/do have one beer or one drink or two and feel like they have no problem handling and shooting guns. I'm sure some of the time that is actually the way it works.

But for me they do not mix. If I'm at a social event where alcohol is served and I'm carrying I will T-total. I'm a little older now and I find that I don't need to drink to enjoy myself at this stage in my life. Being an old timer and of small physical stature my current attitude is that I need my gat with me a lot more than I need a drink. And I am not even talking about the legal implications of using a firearm with ANY amount of alcohol in your system. This is just how I roll and I'm very comfortable with it.

I think the key to the correct approach for everyone is the old sayin' by my buddy Clint: "A man's got to know his limitations." In fact that rule kinda works in many aspects of life, don'tcha think?

Dude I don't even drink and I chose to post a pic not a gripe. I have not seen one thing that endorsed drinking and shooting. All I saw was booze & guns in pics together. Please point out any post I missed where it showed people drunk off their rears laughing and shooting unsafely.

Did I used to drink? YES A LOT. Just not my thing anymore either. Have I chose to lecture these guys? NO. WHY? It is none of business what they do.

Now please if you would like to add to this thread then do so. But pictures not lectures.

Hahahaha this is great man. Gave me a good laugh.

As for addressing the content of the thread and what others have said: Since alcohol in small amounts has been proven to be more healthy than to not consume any at all, becoming more proficient with your chosen weapon for self defense and then improving your health afterwards with a drink sounds like a great life decision.

Well shucks. Irish, you are right, and you and everyone else has my sincere apology. I just reread my post and it did seem to be pretty preachy.

If you really want an explanation...

The rifle is a Colt Sporter II A2. It was registered before the state AWB took effect, and the state of CT considers it a (fully registered) "assault weapon".

That comes with certain "privileges", such as being able to have a flash hider, bayonet lug and collapsible stock. Today in CT, you cannot just purchase any AR off the shelf and add your choice of collapsible stock to it. Why? Because blood would run deep in the streets... of course.

The rifle shoots great with the original fixed stock as well as the collapsible one. In short, it's mainly done to (entirely legally) piss off the liberals.

My Glock 19, 20, and 29 along with my collection of bourbon and rum. They go great separately, but never together (even though they may look great together)

Bourbons include: Eagle Rare, Elijah Craig, Bulleit, Knob Creek, Buffalo Trace, and Maker's Mark

Rums include: Mount Gay, Captain Morgan Black, Captain Morgan Private Stock, Kraken, and Cruzan No 9

My next purchases will be a Glock 26, along with some El Dorado rum and Woodford Reserve bourbon.

Thanks. I also enjoy Bombay Sapphire as well as Martin Millers. I'm partial to Tanqueray too, but do not notice anything particularly special about their "10" single batch stuff. Beefeater has always been my favorite.

It's not the weight (remember, I carry a Beretta 92 with 19 rounds on board and 2 20rd spares), it's the capacity.

I belt carried my P238 for a week while my Beretta was out getting NS installed. Was thrilled to have the 92 back, after 6 years the weight doesn't mean a thing :dunno:

MasterShake

To each their own. The weight doesn't bother me TOO much but the length does a little. When I sit down and I got a half inch to an inch of pistol bulging out of the back of my pants, it's noticeable and a little annoying to me.

I've had a few drinks (scotch) tonight, and there is a PPQ, Ruger, Glock, and P99 within reach. Oddly enough, neither has killed anyone.

It's not about "guns and booze". It's about the person who is drinking.
