You didn't specify caliber? Plenty of good .22s out there, but I will just guess you mean something larger. $500 is right on the cusp of "sometimes you can find them on sale" territory.

Springfield XD

Sigpro 2022

Two CZ 82's in 9X18 Mak or two 83's in .380

A few "plain" 1911's come in under that number

those are just a few options off the top.

you are going to have to narrow it down by purpose and desired caliber or this thread will look like the Sunday Times.

I counted ten or eleven handguns just on the first page that were listed at 500 or less that I suspect could all be put in service and be more than adequate http://glocktalk.com/classifieds/showcat.php?cat=5

If I were in need of a $500 handgun just off the top of my head from the above classifieds there is a guy near me selling a G19, third generation, near new for 500. While I like the G26 better for carry and the G34 better at the range, the G19 would be a good "one size fits all" pistol that could be concealed and used for extended range sessions easily. I would try to come closer to ~450 for a used G19 though.

And I just read you are looking for a .40. The same add indicates the guy is also selling a G23 for 500. Also seems a bit high for me. I don't think it would be difficult to find a police trade in G22 for around 400.

Of course there are. One of these is only around $330 and mine has been perfectly reliable. No issues whatsoever, and good for concealed carry.

Rock Island Armory 1911. A simply outstanding economical 1911 pistol that is routinely available at about $410 plus tax.

Springfield 1911 G.I. Recently bought one for $400 plus tax. It is a very very good pistol.

Glock 17/22, etc. I very much like the Glock pistol. They can be found new for less than $500 and used for less than that. I've had a 17L, 21 and 22. They have been uniformly excellent in every respect.

These are the three handguns I would suggest for the price range stipulated. There are many other fine handguns in the $500 range. Others will doubtless offer their opinions.

OP, why .40? Why not 9mm?

Most folks want a 9mm or a .45, but I don't see a lot requesting a gun in .40:dunno:

If it's a .40 you want then it's a S&W Sigma you should get. If you want a Glock, there are USED 22s, 23s and 27s around for under $500. If you plan on carrying this gun, perhaps one of the new single-stack 9mms would suit you more. They are out there....very plentiful and very affordable.

Good luck and shoot safe!

Because that's what my dad wants. We've talked about a S&W SD40VE (Sigma) already and that's probably what he will get. I just wanted a list of other guns under $500 in .40 in case he wasn't satisfied with the SD40VE.

I can respect that - Dad's always deserve the best! You're a good son!

I hear great things about the new Sigma (SD line). I have a police trade SW40E that I like very much! I think you and your dad will be happy with the SD40VE.

Well thanks! Only being 20 and all, I have to prove i'm not like all the other kids. I try to be good to everyone that deserves it.

On another thread specifically asking about the SD40VE (seen here (http://www.glocktalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1430176)) ronin.45 - on post #11 had said the frame was flimsy, but not in those exact words. So just in case my old man wasn't happy, or I did't like it, I figured I'd be prepared with a list of options.

If I was a poor man and in need of a quality pistol I would buy a Ruger SR9, that is the best semi auto I've seen at the price point. about $429 'round here, and since you need an inexpensive gun you will also need inexpensive ammo! 9mm is a great round.

If your limit is $500, don't buy a Sigma! There are far too many good guns in that price range to settle for the Sigma. Step up to the M&P for a much better gun in your price range.

IMO, everything in the under $500 list mentioned is quite a bit higher on the totem pole than a Sigma.

They have one of the worst triggers of any gun. Even our local gunsmith, who is excellent, can only make them passable.
They have proprietary light rails so most lights/lasers won't fit. They have little aftermarket support in holsters and accessories. They aren't popular enough for most dealers to carry mags in stock.
Ad nauseum.

I'm not an M&P/XD/Beretta/FN/CZ/etc. guy by any means, but any of them would be a much better choice. For $500 I'm getting a Glock.

I've sold guns for over ten years and I can honestly say that few people buy the Sigma because it's exactly what they want. They buy it because it's what they can afford and the Hi-point was too ugly.

Think about it this way.
Why has it never become popular?
It's a long running design from a major manufacturer that routinely sells for less than $300. It should be the #1 selling handgun in the country. If it was in any way competitive with the other guns I mentioned, it would be.

Okay, this information is substantially more helpful than just a "Don't buy a Sigma".

I played with a Sigma the other night. I hated how it looked, felt in my hand, and the trigger pull left a lot to be desired to boot. The M&Ps are far sexier and there is a reason they are more popular despite their being a tad more expensive.

Okay, this information is substantially more helpful than just a "Don't buy a Sigma".

The thing is, that information isn't accurate for the SD40VE, or the SD9VE.

They don't have a Sigma trigger, the SD trigger is considerably better.

The have a standard Picatinny rail, not the proprietary Sigma rail.

The one factor that is true is that they don't have many dedicated aftermarket accessories, but for holsters they generally fit quite well in Glock 19 leather. I snagged a DeSantis Mini Scabbard for the G19 and my SD9VE fits in it like a glove.

I just got the SD9VE, and can't believe how impressed I am with it - to the point that I'm considering selling the M&P 9c that sits at Mrs Aahzz's bedside and replacing it with a second SD. The SD feels better to us.

Sigma SW 9/40 VE pistols have a very bad trigger. While they are quite reliable, the poor trigger really affects accuracy and shooting pleasure. I don't have any experience with the SD.

FWIW...I think the Stoeger Cougar represents a very good value for around $400.

Why Sigma? They have a poor reputation and if the budget is under $500, instead of under $300, you have many better choices. If you want a .40, I jjust looked at Bud's used listings and he has SA XD 40 for $379, CZ 75B 40 for $419, Beretta PX4 with night sights $429, Glock 22 Gen 4 for $469 (I wouldn't pay that much), S&W M&P .40 with night sights for $469, Glock 23 Gen 4 for $469, FN FNP with night sights $499. That's oonly because he doesn't have many .40's listed. If you want 9mm, add some Sigs and Berettas to the list - some Springfield and Taurus .45's, etc. The possibilities are practically endless. Go to a gun shop.

Why Sigma?...

The SD he mentioned is the replacement for the Sigma, not an actual Sigma. If you look at the S&W website today, you will see that the old Sigmas with the awful trigger and proprietary rail are no longer listed...
