Get a Saiga rifle in 7.62x39 or 5.45x39 and convert it to its AK glory. Lol. Or you can get both, I did.

"Tactical rifle" is a very broad term that can cover anything from a bolt action rifle to a full auto carbine.
As usual, it depends on what you are trying to accomplish.

I like my 10/22 for tactically dispatching varmints at night.

If you can afford $1,200 to $1,800 dollars take a look at Krebs Custom.

Otherwise I prefer either Colt (Defense) or Arsenal, Inc.

Stating your intended use will go a long way in determining what to suggest.

Either my tactical AK sidefolder in 7.62x39 fmj or my tactical Uberti '73 in .38 spl rnfp, depending on which tactical tactics I'm doing tactically.
One is for paper, the other is for steel.

How about I clear it up a little bit. Home defense, competitive shooting, some short-mid range hunting. State your favorite semi-auto rifle, and favorite bolt action rifle.

Well I would never use a bolt action for HD, so I'll stick with a semi suggestion. Noveske N4 Lite, with whatever bells and whistles you like.

I didn't mean to imply using a bolt action for HD. Thanks for pointing that out. I do a lot of mid-long range shooting with bolt actions (obviously being for the long range) and semi autos for the mid range.

Hard to beat a good AK74, combined with a .308 bolt action. Not much you can't do with that combo.

Not really. He said he's open to anything.
So, may I suggest a Hi-Point carbine, or a Feather AT-9? They are uber tactical.
As a Tactical rifle this one did well

Now we're getting somewhere.
How far (or near) is mid-long range?
Or long range, or mid range?

What game are you after with the short-mid range hunting?
Elk or gophers?
What competetitive shootine events?
Appleseed or 3 gun?

.308 Saiga with 20" barrel - they're accurate; not quite bolt-action accurate, but in the ball game. Convert it....or not.

I'll take either my S&W X model or my tricked out DPMS 308!
Um.. Stag model2R. Good rifle for the $$. Colt, BCM etc for more serious needs like Military or Police. Savage makes a VERY accurate .308 turnbolt for a decent price. .308 will take just about any big game in the US with the right bullet, just sayin.

This. Theyre top notch AKs. Theyre cheap too.
If you want one for target shooting get one in 5.45x39mm as well. You can buy 1,080 rounds for $140.
These days you can add anything to them that you can an AR.
