So a couple weekends ago I found that I had purchased a SW1911TA. This sometimes happens. If I really tried, I'm sure I could recall the moment when I held the gun and said "Oh, why not?" to a guy who obviously viewed the question as rhetorical. Sometimes I just have absolutely no self-control.

So today was my first good opportunity to take it to the range. I'm not a big 1911 guy, so my knowledge is somewhat limited. My only other experience with the 1911 has been a Kimber Tac Ultra II that I bought a couple of years ago (it's been flawless).

So I decided to use the 2 mags that came with the S&W, as well as 2 Wilson Combat 47Ds. Each mag was loaded with 8 rounds of Blazer Aluminum cased FMJ and cycled through the gun 4 times each. Then they were then loaded with 8 rounds of Blazer Brass cased FMJ and cycled through the gun 3 times each.

FTF occurrences per cycle - Aluminum
SW mag 1: 1-2-1-1
WC mag 1: 0-0-0-0
SW mag 2: 0-3-0-1
WC mag 2: 0-0-1-1

FTF occurrences per cycle - Brass
SW mag 1: 0-3-0
WC mag 1: 0-1-0
SW mag 2: 0-0-1
WC mag 2: 0-0-0

Finally I put 2 8 round mags of Speer Gold Dot 230 HP through with zero FTFs (using WC mag 2).

Now I'm not sure if I just need to run a few hundred more rounds through or whether I should be really concerned.

What do you guys/gals think?

Seems to be a common occurance with this gun... With Brass looks like you put 12 mags through it so Out of 100 rounds you have 5 FTF or a 5% failure Rate

My friend bought the same gun 2 weeks ago, and had exactly the same failure rate shooting Magtech FMJ in my Wilson Elite Tactical Mags we did 12 magazines also, and he had the exact same 5 failure 5% rate.

Right now it's back at S&W.

Good Luck.

I'm on my 3rd SW1911, actually I have found the opposite. The ACT mags actually ran well and my Cobra mags just as well. I did have early FTF's on 1911pd scandium but it cleared up and ran 100% after about 300 rounds as long as it was clean and cared for. I would give it a few more boxes and then if not, SW has pretty solid cust. service

I'm gonna put a couple hundred more through it to see if it smooth out the feeding. I don't plan to carry this one, so I'm going to be patient. If it doesn't straighten up by the 500 round mark. I'll send it to S&W for some work.

I've been looking at the eseries S&W 1911 at my LGS. Great price and feels great in my hand. The trigger pull is also sweet. This is interesting about the issues above. For me this will not be a carry pistol, just a pistol I have always wanted.

The 2 mags that came with my E Series were crap and caused all kinds of jams. Switched to my Wilson Combat mags and have had zero issues.

This is really a shame for this series of pistols as they are quite sharp looking. I've read several threads now of people experiencing FTFs regardless of mags used and these are people with prior 1911 experience. Until S&W can figure out what the issue is, I think Ill continue to wait.
