Defending Against Body Armor

Mas,
This Batman thingy has us all twitching.
I've considered defending myself against a heavily armed,
and armored, assailant before.
My thoughts have been;
1) Even with body armor,
someone is likely to go down at least temporarily taking small arms fire.
2) Aiming for the pelvis might be a fine idea.

Do you have any specific ideas about this scenario that might help save lives?
