I am looking for a handgun in 9mm. full size or compact that has a manual safety. He wants it for home defensive and plinking so no worries about concealing it. Rails for a light would also be nice.

Beretta 92, nice weight. If you are not worried about carry.
If want cheaper option Ruger P95.

My dad would probably whip my $#%& with the butt of his Ruger SR9 if I was ever disrespectful enough to call him my old man.

It is a term of endearment.

Same here, my brothers and I have referred to our father as "Pops" or "the old man" as long as I can remember.:dunno:

I got mine a Colt Official Police .38 spl. 30 or so years ago. He still has it and yep, it's still loaded.

S&W M&P 9 can be had with a manual safety.

I love my PX4 Storm. The standard models have a safety/de-cocker. Interchangeable back straps are nice too.

:agree:

or a CZ75.

For the requirements you listed I'd choose one of these two.

There are so many choices.
Baby Eagle II 9mm is an awesome gun, just heavy.
CZ 75, Full or Compact 9mm is a great choice.
Beretta 92 is another awesome 9mm.

AND, if you really love him you could get him a Sig P226:whistling:

A great idea, especially if you are going with the "new" market. I have a "pre-rail" and it's a terrific gun.

If used were acceptable and you could shop around, I would also suggest something in a third generation S&W auto, perhaps from the "TSW" line.

I'd say a CZ75B because it's a great gun with a great feel and it's priced right.

Really though I'd just take him to the GS and say Dad look them all over ask as many questions as you need to ask and let him pick out the one he likes best. What is best for him might not be the best gun who's opinions are coming from someone much younger.

Update

so we went out shooting at our rental/range today. Anyway long story short we were looking at a G17 and he has some issues with his hands which were more sever than I thought but anyway he couldn't work the slide release on any auto he tried.

So we moved over to the wheel guns and Ill be dammed if I didn't created a monster. He loved the Ruger SP101 but only shooting 38 sp out of it. I really think he will end up picking one up.

It was pretty fun shooting with him again. It had been too long.

I bought my Mom a SP101 2.25" with the CT laser grip on it. Got it sighted in dead on at 15 yards with 38+P Golden Sabers and she's good to go. Great gun. About to pick one for myself later on this week.

Man you have great taste in guns. Not so much with college football teams but in guns you are spot on.
