View Full Version : Best handgun for pocket carry?

Im trying to decide on an ultra compact pistol that can be easily pocket carried. I would prefer something in either 9mm, .38, .357, or .40.

The consensus here seems to be a j frame revolver, however im curious if there are any other picks which would rank high on the list. Bodyguard .380?

Sig P938/238
Beretta Nano
Kahr PM9

I prefer the Sig. Both have Tritium Sights. Both have VZ Grips.

Reliable and accurate.

As for the question about single action pistols...Do I feel safe? Yes. The trigger pull is about 8 lbs, and the safety requires deliberate action, unlike a 1911.

I pocket carry a Kahr MK9 on a regular basis. It is all stainless and 8oz heavier than the PM9 and CM9.

All are great pocket guns.

Sig P238, and I'm sure the 938 too, I just haven't got my hands on one yet.

I love my Pm9, it's my ultra light carry for shorts.

I can only speak for the gun that is currently in my pocket right now...the S&W Bodyguard 380. I've been pocket carrying this thing 5+ days a week for almost two years now and I have to say it hasn't given me a reason to look anywhere else for a pocket gun. About 1K flawless rounds through it and it's one of the early EAA serial numbered models without the ring around the laser. I would definitely recommend it...

I have two J-Frames and carry both.

1) S&W 342 it 38.
It weights 11.1/13.5 empty/loaded
with 135 gr Speer GDHP short barrel 38 P+.

2) S&W 640-1 357 all stainless steel
22.6/25/1 empty/loaded with Remington Golden Saber 357 mag.

For a second, backup gun I prefer the lighter 342 38.
As a primary gun the 640 357 no question.
A dress gun belt, like my DeSantis, makes pocket carry of the
heavier stainless steel 357 practical.

Also have a Kahr MK40 Elite.
But find J-Frames draw much better from the pocket for me.

If I had to go pocket auto?
With a good belt, Kahr MK40 or MK9 would be my suggestions.
Any belt, any pants, Kahr CM9/PM9.

I like the lightweight j-frames as a first choice. Then the lcp/p3at next. Maybe the kahr pm9 size as a third option, but I prefer the other two sizes/choices for pocket carry. Always wound up belt carrying the pm9.

I have several pocket pistols as well as a couple of small revolvers. I have an easier time drawing my S&W 642 from a pants pocket than any of my pistols, including my LWS 32, which is about the smallest pistol you'll ever find.

Hard to beat the 442/642/640 j frames!
Or a PM/CM9 if you want an auto.
Can't see carrying a .380 these days with small 9mms and .38s around....

Been pocket carrying for 2.5 months now.

Ruger LCR or J frame's for so many reasons.

07-23-2012, 14:29
The J frame revolver (IMO) is the closest thing to a perfect pocket gun;

It always works
Shoots a heavy bullet that expands reliably
Is light weigh and round in shape (not as likely to 'print')
Easy to palm and use quickly
It always works

I own a CM9, 642, 638CT, and a KLCR. My 638CT gets the most pocket time.

I got a ruger LCR and intended for pocket carry. I don't see how may people can a j frame in a pocket. I do not wear skinny jeans. Usually it's carpenter jeans. I cannot comfortably or discretley carry the j frame in a pocket. Especially not with a holster. I can get it in a side pocket of cargo pants. I will be getting an LCP soon to accommodate my pocket carry needs. Others may be able to PC a J frame, but that setup never worked for me.

I carry a LCR with boot grips when it gets really hot out.

Thanks everyone for the input. I really like the looks and reviews of the S&W Bodyguard .380. Im also interested in a S&W 442.

I guess ill have to go try and find a local shop, to see how they feel in the hand and pocket.

Do you guys find that your pocket carry pieces conceal easily in shorts/jeans, or does it look like youre walkin around with a giant bulging pocket?

I think you'll find the Bodyguard doesn't print at all in shorts or jeans, that is - unless you wear really tight jeans.

I carry a LC9 in my front pocket almost daily. It is a little bulky but no one seems to notice it and I like having the little extra firepower. I actually got an IWB Crossbreed holster today I am going to try out for those days in which I want to keep my pocket free.

As far as the LC9 - I love it. Almost 500 rds through it and no problems. VERY reliable gun and I actually desired the extra safety features.

For pocket carry a Seecamp 380 is my favorite. The Seecamp 32 is another favorite but it is the same size as the Seecamp 380 so I prefer the 380.

A Rohrbaugh R9s (9mm) is smaller than the other options listed by others (excluding the Seecamps) but the R9s costs more.

Anything larger than a Seecamp goes in a holster on a belt as I find a larger pistol a pain to carry in a pant pocket. I have a number of the handguns listed by others and no way would I carry any of them in a pant pocket. I do carry some of them in a jacket pocket, especially a S&W J frame

340PD or M&P 340.

Colt Detective Special. 6 rounds beats 5.

I carry my 9mm nano iwb. But for pocket carry a S&W 649 j frame. You can just get a good grip when you draw it from the pocket.

I used to pocket carry my g33 which could only be done in certain pants/shorts but that's been replaced with a 340pd. It's so light I've had to chech to make sure it was still there a few times. The only downfall is the number of rounds.

LCP 380 with Hornaday Critical Defense..

07-25-2012, 08:39
I pocket carry a LCR357 as a backup most of the time. The only time I change to a S&W442 is if I need a little slimmer grip in the pocket or I want the LCR IWB for main carry. I'm a Revolver Guy so these Two are my pocket Guns. I have carried my SP101 in a back pocket but it makes a better IWB Gun.

The S&W 642 loaded with Speer GD 38spl+P, 135gr, Short Barrel works for me. I use an Uncle Mike's pocket holster in front pocket.
