View Full Version : Trim .308 case length?

I'm reloading some once-fired .308 Winchester brass. I usually reload pistol ammo, so I don't pay too much attention to case length trimming. I full length sized the .308 brass, measured several, and they're at 2.015" (the maximum case length). The trim-to length is 2.005" (.010" less). Should I trim the cases now, or wait until they get longer than 2.015"? I think I should trim them back to 2.005", but I'm not 100% sure.

TIA,

Jim

Trim them until you can see that the case neck is being cut. You will find that barely touching the case end will cut one part of the neck and not the other...when they expand length-wise, it doesn't expand the same amount around the entire rim. I try to just get newly exposed brass showing at the end of the rim without going much below the max case length (if any).

If you are setting your COL per a manual, going 0.020" under max length isn't going to be noticeable. If you are determining your COL by backing off the lands, every bit of rim length you can get is needed (IMO).
