Here I go again with the oddball pistols. First the Mauser M2 and now this. :embarassed:

For those that have never heard of the CZ 40B, it was a pistol that was the idea of Colt. Colt wanted a double action pistol in their lineup, but the Double Eagle was a relative failure and production stopped in 1997.

In 1998, Colt partnered with CZ to have them design a good double action pistol. The result was the Colt Z40 and, as the name suggested, it was developed for and chambered only in 40S&W. It shares the 1911's grip angle, which was a design stipulation that Colt implemented. To make a long story short, CZ produced the Z40 for Colt for a year before the business relationship soured and Colt dropped it from their lineup. CZ continued to produce the pistol for another year under the moniker "40B". With such a short production run for this pistol under both names, there aren't many around. The only finish it was offered in is the black coating that CZ uses for its other pistols. The 1911-style grips are black rubber.

The 40B is different from anything Colt or CZ produced before or since. However, like everything CZ produces, its a very well built pistol. Unlike the metal CZ 75 based pistols, this has an aluminum frame, not steel. Despite the fact that this pistol looks so different from the CZ 75, the action and trigger have an identical feel. When you handle it, you know you have a CZ in your hands. Like other CZ pistols, the slide rides inside the frame.

Does anyone else have a 40B or Z40?

Enjoy the pics. No box or papers, but I got a decent deal on it. :)

Bac,

I had a CZ 40P(different gun). Let's just say I hope your's works better than mine.

I loved the ergonomics but according to everything I've read on CZ forum the 40B and the 40P are CZ's least reliable models. I never could get mine to run 100%.

I would love to have a 75 someday though.

[/QUOTE]

The 2 engineers (I can't pronounce much less spell their names!) credited with the 40B went on to design the 2075 rami when the deal with Colt fell apart. Put them side by side and you can see the rami is a scaled down 40B as the same designer (another name I can't spell or pronounce) did both pistols apperances. Both have actions based on the 75B.

If the rami came with a decocker instead of a saftety it would be the perfect carry gun for me.

My roommate had one of those. I thought it was a inferior firearm to the glock at first, but when I eventually fired it at the range, I was pleasantly surprised. It was accurate and had very low recoil for being a 40.

From Milan trkulia

You asking the right person as I was right on middle of it, when the Colt Z 40 happened.
Beside myself, another two persons you know very well, were instrumental in Colt Z or CZ .40 B project. It was Ira Kay and Kerby Smith. I will send you a copy of Ira Kay's e-mail from September 18th, 1997 describing chronology of the Colt/CZ relationship involving COLT Z/CZ.40 B projects. This is if I manage to find it.
Just remember, there was just one significant specification put forward by the Colt people - this pistol must bear exterior similarity with the the Colt 1911. It was just a verbal request, nothing was written down or signed on this design matter. We just shook the hands. That was it! All another work was left on the CZ engineers. Shape of the pistol was designed by the Industrial Architect Vojtech Anderle (also author of CZ 100 design), and all interior mechanism works on Colt Z .40 was done by Radek Hauerland, who also worked with me later on CZ 2075 RAMI project. Your statement is absolutely correct, the Colt Z 40/CZ.40B pistol mechanism was fully adopted from CZ 75 line of pistols. After CZ/Colt deal collapse, pistol was made by CZ for an another customers, but in limited numbers. When Radek Hauerland worked on trigger mechanism for COLT Z .40, he at the same time got ready SA/DA and Decocker versions of this pistols. Therefore it was easy to later produce all these trigger mechanism versions, and also the caliber conversion down from .40 to 9x19 was very easy to make. Beside the Colt Z.40 and CZ .40 B pistols, there was an another model based on COLT Z .40 design produced in 9 x 19 cal and called the CZ LE 9.
