This year has been incredible for me when it comes to finding and purchasing vintage classics in beautiful condition. I just picked up this like new in box 1960 Colt Officer's Model Match in 38 Special. Its got the Python action and it feels at least as smooth as every Python I own. Its five years older than my oldest Python, so that may have something to do with it, but whatever the reason, the action is truly amazing. The hammer is also shared with the Python, though this has the firing pin on the hammer, unlike the Python.

These guns share the serial number range with the Trooper, but there weren't too many built in comparison with some other Colt revolvers. They were made for almost 20 years from the early 50's through the early 70's, but in very limited numbers. They are precision target revolvers and were available in 38 special and 22lr. For a very limited time, I believe Colt offered it in 22 Mag as well.

Anyway, the gun, including the grips, is in absolutely pristine condition. In addition, its complete with the original box, registration, and the test target that these match revolvers shipped with. Most of them came with the larger Python walnut grips, but they were offered for a while with this smaller set. The rarer the better, as far as I'm concerned. The finish is the Colt matte blue, not royal blue, and other than the slightest muzzle wear on the tip of the barrel, it looks like it just left the factory. Lockup is very tight. I don't believe this one saw much range time. I'm hoping to get it to the range on Sunday.

Nuff said, I guess. Thoughts?

Please enjoy the pics. Its looks pretty good for a 52 year old revolver, eh?

I would love to have just the grips for mine. Originals are worth almost as much as I paid for the gun:shocked:

I wasn't that lucky. Some Bubba put Pachs on it. These were the only "respectable" wood grips I could find in a 200 mile radius.

Then I will really offend some when I report that my Officer's Model Match is actually more accurate than my Python.

I had no idea that the original grips are so valuable.

The last pair of the original to that era (1955) OMM were up for sale at around $90. I did exaggerate a bit. I paid a whole $240 for my OMM about 3 years ago. The owner of the shop said that nobody wanted "An old 6" .38" and he could use the room in the case. I felt so sorry for him I offered him what I had on me at the moment.

Congrats again. That is my favorite of your recent finds. It looks to be in very good shape. I can second your thought on the smoothness of the action and can tell you it is every bit as acurrate as my Python. Mine is a 1959 model with the full size grips. I love the fully checkered grips. Again congrats on a nice old Colt.

What I don't understand is how you manage to take a picture of a matte gun and it still looks like it was polished.

I thought I was doing good with 5 in July, now I feel like a piker:crying:

I just checked my purchase log. I bought 5 in February of this year. However, before that, the last time I bought 5 or more in a single month was 7 in June of 2010. I was in 1911 mode back then and 6 out of 7 were 1911s.

Of course, I just bought 7 this month and next month should be at least 8. However, it will be the most I ever spent in one month on guns.

My record for quanity was 13 way back in July of 2007. I haven't sold a gun since joining GT. I just don't sell them anymore.

Either way it sounds like it's going to be a good month.

I think my best month was four. I'm trying to limit myself to 12 a year. I've already got 10 so far, two more this year. My core collection is nearing its completion. 3 surplus rifles, 4 hunting rifles and it's done. After that I'll continue on with my S&W collecting. Maybe a few Ruger revolvers. These I see as a life long hobby, nothing I need. I just enjoy collecting and shooting them.

Lately I've been more focused on reloading tools and supplies. Scopes, magazines, holsters, etc for guns I already have.

Hi guys! Just joined the forum. But the other day I was given the opportunity to trade for a 1956 colt officers model match .38. It appears to not have been shot much at all. It is all original and double-action. It's a 6 inch barrel. S/N is 905809. Here's the catch. It appears to have been dipped- reblued. However they didn't buff it out so there's NO wear on lettering or anywhere. Only a couple VERY small dings that don't show the metal because of the dip (I think). I'm wondering if anyone here can help me put a value on the gun because the ring he wants to trade it for is worth $600-900. Thanks!!

As for the OMM, the reblue does hurt the value a good bit. I'd say its worth less than $600. However, its hard to judge value on these, because not enough of them come up for sale.

Since you brought up the subject of Colt Officer Model Target. I have two. One is 22 the other is 38 Spl. One has the target grip that other doesn't. I would like to get a target grip for the one that doesn't. As stated before original grips are hard to find and pricey. I want it for shooting so what after market grip can I get that fits.

Also, the 22 rim fire has light strike hammer hits when shooting in double action. Where can I find a replacement spring?

I know who shoots a Colt OMM double action? Well I do:whistling:

I don't need original Colt parts as I will save the original.

Thanks for your opinion! I really appreciate it. I haven't shot the OMM yet, but I'm DYING to. As soon as I have time I will. I did find time yesterday morning to take it to the one gun dealer/shop owner in the area that I know and trust. He basically offered me $600 for it and said that was a wholesale price. Meaning he thinks he could sell it for more. Anyways, it doesn't REALLY matter now... Because I've already finalized the trade and I'll never sell it. :D thanks again "BAC" for the quick response!

ANOTHER great find!

You have some great LGSs!

Now, you have a problem, I have a solution:

You have said you are going to run out of room in your gun room in 30 more weapons...well, 29 now.

I think you need to do what museums do when they have too much stuff and not enough room - have rotating exhibits.

You could circulate your pieces out among the forum members. We would be willing to clean them and verify function. :whistling:

You free up space in your gun room. You have more space for more additions.

I would be happy to organize your exhibits. I would be willing to contribute my Beretta 9000S to the traveling exhibit. No charge. Happy to help out and increase exposure to this weapon, and I know you don't have one!

PM me!
