View Full Version : What to replace when buying a used 1911....

Traded a pimp'd out Remmy 870 for a used (2009 era) Taurus PT 1911 AR. Blued.
Got a few questions:
What should I look for to make sure nothing needs replacing?
What are some good sites to get recoil springs, hammer springs, upgrades?
I really want to replace the recoil spring right off. Will it run any average full size 1911 recoil spring? (I'm just weird that way)
Thanks for replies, in advance! :wavey:
Midwayusa and Brownells for parts.
If the gun is reliable then all you'd need is a recoil spring. 16 pound is standard, and what I mostly run. My hardball gun needed a more powerful 18 pound spring to run. If you buy Wolff springs, they usually come with a firing pin spring. It's a good idea to change them together, but not really necessary.
Nothing else is needed but for a few spare mags

Sounds good, I looked on Wolff's sight......does it run "COLT STD 16# 1911 Recoil Spring"
I know they're the same design and all that, just wanna know if there's a difference between brands. (i.e. Will a 5'' Colt use the same Recoil Spring as my Taurus PT 1911?)
It sure will if....
A. Your gun doesn't use some convoluted dual spring set up.
B. Your gun is a full sized Government type model.

It does run the standard government model 1911 stuff. I also have a PT1911 SS great gun shoots everything and never any problems.

Good. I've heard a lot of positive things about the Taurus 1911. This one is an AR (accessory raily-thingy)model.
Hope it works better than my Glock 19 that I sold off.

Congrats on the new addition.
If the gun shoots fine, I don't replace anything, except I use Wilson Combat Magazines, unless it's a 357 Magnum...then I have to use the factory Coonan 357 Magnum Magazines from the maker.

Man this thing is a btch to find holsters for! I'm using a $6 IWB holster currently....I used to say I would never be caught dead with one. But...it's not too terrible..
The gun shoots great...lots of holster wear. (IMO, it's just character) When I got it, the extractor tension was like 10 oz. so I put it about 32-36oz. (about 2 1/4 lbs?)
Tac driving machine!!! Recoil is so much better than the Gen 4 G19 I used to have.

Another good place to find springs and other parts for your 1911s is Ebay of all places. I just got a Wilson 18lb spring for $8 with free shipping. Midway will charge about seven bucks extra for shipping. I really gotta wan't something bad from Midway to order anything from them any more. They used to be so handy. 20yrs ago I'd buy a thousand .357 125gr jacketed Remington bullets for reloading, pay $62 or whatever it was and no taxes and no shipping charges. You paid what the catalog price was period. How they went from that to charging up the w***oo shipping for each individual item you order is beyond me.

Yeah, it sucks if you just want 50 rounds of a certain type or something small. $40 for the ammo and then $20 for shipping.
I bought some Wilson Combat springs at a gun show:thumbsup:

There is no need to be a Richard Cranium.
well it's used, so I'd say recoil spring. Replace those every 2500-3K rounds. If everything works well nothing you need to worry about.

that's because it's a 1911, they're heavier, thus much better recoil management. And of course it's gonna shoot better, parts are actually fitted
far as carrying it, blackhawk makes some nice kydex ones. Anything htat's for a railed colt 1911 shoudl work.

Yeap, the new recoil spring made a world of difference.
Nope, BLACKHAWK does not make a holster for this 1911. So far, the only company I have found to make a holster for it are iTac Defense and I guess some other custom shops. The rail on the Taurus is stupid and somehow lower on the frame or wider or something.

At least it works better than my Glock. :tongueout:

Don't come around here much? Man, there is some SERIOUS hate for Taurus roun' these parts! Luckily I think most of the haters won't bother to post up if they got nothing good to say.
I don't care either way, just an observation. Congrats on the new gun.
I would echo what Jason D said but also ask what it's used for. If this is a range toy then a fresh spring and if it shoots then that's all there is to it. If this will be used for defense I would have a gunsmith strip it down and examine for any worn parts.
Have fun.
Oh and don't forget to gold plate it!
