Saudi Arabia says it would ‘intercept Israeli planes en route to Iran’

Saudi Arabia will not permit Israeli aircraft to cross its territory on the way to strike Iran, Yedioth Ahronoth reported on Thursday. The message was passed to Jerusalem via Obama administration officials during recent talks in Israel, it claimed.

Awesome! Thank you my Saudi friends.

I wonder if they will allow US planes to attack Iran from Saudi airbases?

They will try anyways. If Israel wants to bomb Iran, you can bet Iran will get bombed. If Iran tries to bomb Israel, the will just lose what few functional aircraft they have left.

Methinks the Saudi Royal Family has been watching the news from Egypt and doesn't think they would adapt too well to being thrown in prison by the Muslim Brotherhood after an overthrow.

This. Saudi Arabia hates Iran, particularly after the foiled bombing of their ambassador last year.

If memory serves me, when Israel bombed an Iraqi Nuclear plant, the didn't ask for permission to fly over Syrian airspace or any airspace for that matter, nor give any advance warning. They just did it...

ETA: No, it was Jordan, not Syria...

On 7 June 1981, at 15:55 local time (12:55 GMT (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GMT)), the operation was initiated. The Israeli planes left Etzion Airbase (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taba_International_Airport), flying unchallenged in Jordanian (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jordan) and Saudi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saudi_Arabia) airspace.[52] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Opera#cite_note-eitan-51) To avoid detection, the Israeli pilots conversed in Saudi-accented Arabic while in Jordanian airspace and told Jordanian air controllers that they were a Saudi patrol that had gone off course.[36] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Opera#cite_note-simons-35) While flying over Saudi Arabia, they pretended to be Jordanians, using Jordanian radio signals and formations.[36] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Opera#cite_note-simons-35)[58] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Opera#cite_note-57) The Israeli planes were so heavily loaded that the external fuel tanks that had been mounted on the planes were exhausted in-flight. The tanks were jettisoned over the Saudi desert (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nefud).[52] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Opera#cite_note-eitan-51)

Doesn't matter...any Saudi aircraft that makes it into the air will be scrap within moments of approaching an Israeli formation.

I remember reading a few year ago there was a secret deal to allow Israeli planes to flyover. I think this is just for show.

Bull****. Saudi pilots fly F-15s and are trained in the US.

Saudi Pilots are nowhere's near as good as Isreali pilots! Almost ZERO combat experience. They didn't ever cross the border during the Gulf war! Flew very few missions into Kuait! They may have top of the line fighters-same as Isreal but they are no match for them.

It's funny, because two years ago, Saudi Arabia gave Israel permission (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/37653040/ns/world_news-mideast_n_africa/t/saudis-clear-israel-bomb-iran) to use its airspace to bomb Iran.

look at a map. they don't need to fly over saudi arabia to get to iran. sryia, iraq, iran pretty much a straight shot to almost anywhere in iran exect the most southern parts.

Roughly 4% of all F-15 kills were by Saudi pilots...

Royal Saudi Air Force pilots shot down two F-4 Phantoms flown by the Iranian Air Force in a border skirmish in 1984, and two Iraqi Mirages F1 during the Gulf War.

That's just what the Saudis are saying publicly. Privately they want Iran stopped as much as Israel does.

Saudi fighters won't need to go against Israeli fighters. Ever hear of surface to air missiles?

Saudi Arabia has as much right to protect their sovereign airspace as we do.

Why would any of you think they shouldn't?

Despite waht the simple folk are saying, this is closer to the truth and most folks that know the arena are aware of it. They might send up token fighters, too late, so they can say "Ooops", but that would be about it. Their air force is for show compared to the Israeli's and they want Iran silenced and dependent on them anyway.

There aren't a lot of good things to come from a public announcement like this, unless it is for Muslim consumption. Maybe they mean it, or maybe they will show outrage without action when all of their air defense capabilities are suddenly "turned off", like happened to Syria recently.

If this is true on the face, this leaves other options open, very ugly options.

Better stock up on SPF 10,000 sunscreen.

Yup. Israel cannot and will not allow Iran to assemble a functional nuke and in the end they will do what they believe they must.

I knew a guy once that had a $1,200.00 Trap gun. He bragged about it. I had/have a $125.00 Remington 750. We went duck hunting together. I got my limit he got "0". He stopped barging. It's not the equipment a fellow has, it's who knows how to use what he's got that counts.

Yep and those two F1's were shot down over Kuait! And that Saudi pilot was in a formation of US F15C fighters from the 1st Fighter Wing Langley AFB VA the base I was stationed at during the Gulf war. While at Daharan AB SA we escorted the Prince into Kuait after the start of the Airwar so he could get his feet wet!
