View Full Version : Looking to buy first earmuffs
I'm looking to spend about ~$40 on earmuffs. I'll be using it for indoor range only. I have Howard leights quiet band for outdoor use.
I'm looking for one that's wont make my ears so sweaty (I sweat even indoor while shooting). And one that is the best bang for the buck!
I was thinking about buying the HL impact pros, but I wanted more suggestions from you guys.
For indoors, you need both muffs and plugs. I use the Howard Leight Disposable Super Leight Ear Plug NRR33 and the muffs you have now.
Yeah I keep it simple and double up most of the time - always indoors. I have a few pair of quality brand passive muffs at or about 30 db reduction then buy foam plugs rated about the same and keep them in my range bag. If the muffs get beat up of nasty - I replace them at no great cost. I don't spend a lot of time chatting at the range so I don't miss much - as long as I can hear the BEEEP at the beginning of a stage, I'm good.
1. Peltor Ultimate 10 ear muffs, such as these: http://www.midwayusa.com/product/524517/midwayusa-ultimate-10-earmuffs-by-peltor-nrr-30db-black
2. Foam ear plugs, such as these: http://www.midwayusa.com/product/110047/radians-foam-ear-plugs-jar-nrr-32-db-25-pairs
Wear both when shooting indoors. I don't think you can get more effective noise reduction than the above combination (or if so by maybe 1dB or something) and the price is certainly in line with what you are looking to spend.
Make sure you properly insert the foam ear plugs, though. There is a particular way to do it. Twist them down so they are narrow and then very quickly insert them all the way into your ear canal...hold them there for a short bit and you will feel them expand, filling your ear canal. This is how they will work most effectively.

I like them so much that I just ordered another pair. Now I have 3.
Surefire in-ears plus the muffs you have now.
