My brother in law is a hell of a cool guy who's going to get into guns.
With the kids and my sister going back to school, plus truck repair bills I know money is going to be tight for him.
That being said, I was thinking about giving him my 870 Express 18".
Is the Supernova 18" or 14" a better shotgun that's worth the upgrade?
If I got one of the tacticool Supernovas, would I be able to stick a 28" barrel on it for trap/hunting/whatever? If so, how much would Benelli ding me for a second barrel?
Any other recommendations to upgrade to from the 870 express? Gun will be a short barrel with a longer barrel option just for plinking and whathaveyou. I don't shoot my shotguns often, though I do like having one, i just figured he would enjoy the 870 as a gift and I could use this as an excuse to pick up something else.

I have a regular Nova Tactical and really like it, eventually I want to get a Supernova Tactical with a pistol grip. I feel like the Nova fits me better overall than an 870 and I think the action is a bit smoother. Generally it seems that the Benelli isn't much more than a similar 870, for me its worth the extra money. The major downside is the price of an extra barrel is about $300, for just a little more you could buy an 870. I don't hunt so this really isn't an issue for me.

An 870 is hard to beat. I have had a Wingmaster for 40 years. The 870 can do anything a Supernova can.

Very true,......I have a 1969 Wingmaster. Flawless shotgun.
As joecoastie pointed out, Benelli barrels are NOT inexpensive.
870 barrrels (especially ones sold by Mossberg) are pretty cheap, by comparison.

Love my Nova, Super Nova, and Marine Nova. That said the only reason I would go with the 870 is maybe for the acceories like lights, but since I prefer the Nova with 28 inch for trap I kept the same manual of arms in my house.

Get a Mossberg 500.
Get a Mossberg 500.
Agreed. I have had a Benelli and was rather unimpressed compared to a 500.

the Nova is not an upgrade to a 870 its the other way around

I don't have any experience with the tactical version, but I have the 28" Supernova I use for hunting and absolutely love it. It really is a sweet shooter. I've done a bit of shooting with the 870 and 500 too, but the Supernova seems to handle better for me. I would consider it an upgrade over the 870 or 500 personally, though they are both great guns as well.
I owned a Remington, a Mossberg and a Benelli SNT.
Here is why I like the Benelli SuperNova Tactical.

I love my Supernova. However, switching barrels can be prohibitively expensive for many people. If you want to be able to switch barrels without spending a chunk, I would look elsewhere.

Just remember, you cannot add an aftermarket stock to the Nova or Super Nova because the receiver and stock are all one piece. I would just spring for a Mossberg 930SPX. May limit what you can do with it as a hunting shotgun, but it's a nice auto loader for the money.

Actually the Nova is one piece the supernova is not. The supernova has the shim kit to adjust drop and cast.
