Hey gang its been awhile since Ive posted...but I have a question.

I remember it being touted that the balistics of a 10mm at 100 yards was the same as a 45 at muzzle. Is this really true ? Can someone give me an example or 2 ? ...I may have put my foot in my mouth elsewheres on this subject.

Also...Does anyone have a Gen4 G29 yet ? How do you like it compared to the Gen 3 29sf ? Thanks gang !

It's simple, really.

The .45ACP standard is a 230 gr. bullet at 835 FPS muzzle velocity. This produces 356 FPE (Kinetic energy in foot/pounds).

For comparison, Buffalo Bore's .45ACP+P is the same bullet, at about 950 FPS. This produces 460 FPE.

The 10mm Auto standard is a 200 gr. bullet at 1200 FPS muzzle velocity. This produces 639 FPE.

The 10mm Auto standard at 100 yds is approximately 1044 FPS, and 484 FPE.

The 10mm Auto standard at 125 yds is approximately 1017, and 459 FPE.

This means, the 10mm bullet hits a target at 125 yds, with the same energy as a .45ACP would at essentially zero distance.

For the "100 yard" argument, the .45 ACP would require a muzzle velocity of 975 FPS to hit a target at zero distance, to match the 10mm at 100 yds.

Keep in mind, this does not take into account momentum energy. Greater bullet mass makes up some for less raw energy, but by a lot less than it would take to keep up with the comparisons above, and especially at the distance considered. The remaining bullet energy of the .45ACP (even +P) at 100 yds. is abysmal, by comparison.

No, I wouldn't want to stand at 100 yds and have anything shot at me, even if you "can't" hit me. Everyone gets lucky, once in a while. The question was a comparison, as was the reply. At the same time, bullet energy means nothing if you can't put it on target. I'd rather be missed by a .50 BMG than hit with a B-B....at any range. At any rate, it was a good question, worthy of a response.

Watch hickok45's videos when he shoots at his 80 yard gong. With .45 you can easily see the bullet arching into the gong. It's pretty cool. More more difficult to see with even slightly faster rounds like 9mm.
